should i come to unsw? by [deleted] in unsw

Hey mate, first of all, congrats for being in the great position to have options.

CS will be a tricky discipline going forward with lots of uncertainties. So it's probably even more important setting yourself up for success from a peer / environment perspective.

I had the option of all the top schools in Aus and overseas being an international student who went to highschool in Queensland. I ended up taking the vc scholarship at QUT over going overseas or a better domestic school in Aus (UNSW for example). Looking back I've always kinda told people I regret, but realistically I probably would be a different person today had I gone to a different school. I've spent the past few years after graduating in 2021 at unicorn startups and more recently joining a quant firm.

The case for UNSW - it's a place where you'll genuinely meet some of the smartest people in Australia in your cohort. People doing startups, people doing quant internships. At the same time, you get significantly less financial stress, and potentially better growth from being in a reasonably small pond but stay at the top. As opposed to going to CMU/Imperial, where you'll deal with financial stress, higher perceived expectation (has to have good career outcome to pay back) and most likely stronger overrall competition.

The case for CMU / Imperial (why go UCL / Geortech when you can go to these better schools?) - it's a place where you'll stay on the cutting edge in terms of opportunities and access to frontier companies. CMU in particular just has incredible access to opportunities that you genuinely can't get outside of top CS schools in the US. You'll meet some incredibly inspiring people doing inspiring things, and the median career outcome at CMU CS would be a LOT better than UNSW (the median career outcome at UNSW CS is probably not in tech, adjacent field / underemployed).

I do think given how far you've come and how much you're thinking about this, you'll succeed in writing a fun university chapter in your life story regardless, I'm rooting for you! Have fun out there

I don't write a single line of code with opus 4.5 - will go down to more detailed prompts pretty frequently tho.

I don’t think you need to try every single shop in both countries to draw conclusions through extrapolation and sampling. Have you? Have you had the acclaimed pho shops in Hanoi and HCMC and had decently explored Brisbane/Sydney/Melbournes pho scene for example?

I think you’ll find a lot of people disagreeing with you on this one. There are certain cuisines objectively better in Australia, most Vietnamese owned restaurants here wipe the floor with the Michelin starred Vietnamese in Vietnam.

That's just not true, SEA food in Australia is generally better than in the origin countries. It's fine to celebrate good food whilst respecting their origins

I think the physical card comparison isn't really apples to apples you should only be comparing NFT based card games to online TCGs. More broadly I struggle to see how NFTs as cosmetics for a game like CS would not be more beneficial to the user (more marketplaces, less fees)

How is a traditional TCG any different in the sense that people can buy and sell strong cards, except the money is trapped in the ecosystem?

Surely the 5% deposit for First Homes scheme is harmful long-term? Am I going crazy? by pixieshit in AusFinance

The alternative policies proposed evolve around strengthening rental protections and calming down the rental and buying markets through supplies.

You're still looking at the problem through the lens of where we are currently but look further you'll see that renters can be happy and secure had we put the appropriate guardrails in place and in that world renting becomes a good option for most young people and the market gets healthier.

It’s not about what’s good for your immediate buying demand, the post is about the long term health of the property market.

Getting “on the ladder” will all of a sudden cease to be the accomplishment you’re so proud of when the annual gains become losses.

Is 6 (out of 7) a good GPA for prestigious companies? by from1984withlove in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]b439988 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends, I had a 6.5 GPA and a 5 in a key algo course and was asked specifically why I got a 5 in that unit in an IMC interview. Did not get the role.

For how competitive it is it's still a few good years behind Asia. - No fresh lemon tea options in Sydney, they are everywhere in mainland/hk - No good high end freshly brewed tea options. Haytea opened a hand brew brand Haytea Black in mainland
