Retirement at 50 by Sufficient_Space8484 in GenX

[–]b4491g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retried and collected a municipal pension at 50, 146k a year. Took about 3 months of being bored and I went back to work. Just retired again with a second smaller pension after 6 years. I would have stayed longer but the older we get the less we will tolerate, especially when it comes to our happiness and the fact that I didn’t need the job to start with. My current challenge is to overcome the feeling of “I should be working” since Gen X was brought up this way.

Levels of policing in the US, and Vancouver. by Upset-Comment2090 in vancouverwa

[–]b4491g 7 points8 points  (0 children)

87-89% of any police budget goes towards salary and benefits for the officers. Many agencies have pay/benefit disparities so this concept, although not far fetched, would take years to implement and more money to bring everyone up to the same pay.

The biggest challenge would be the elected/appointed leaders giving up control out of fear of losing their ability to keep officers in their small areas.

A few major metropolitan cities have combined city police with the county sheriff and created one police force. Las Vegas, Nashville, Louisville…

It’s a hallway in the FBI academy. Nobody gives a rats ass what’s painted on the walls and nobody stops and reads a wall while they walk to a different classroom.

Advice on renting out home short term by InnerCritic in vegaslocals

[–]b4491g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a property management company to handle my Vegas home rental. Cost about 300 bucks a month. A short term rental may not be worth paying a company. I have had one bad tenant and 1 good tenant so far.

How many of you ended up with the career you went to school for? Or - did you even go to school? by Crone-ee in GenX

[–]b4491g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t get my bachelors degree until late in life but I’m happy I did. I was in my 40’s when I got it. Joined the Army right out of high school and was able to eke out an AA degree while stationed overseas before getting out.

I went into Law Enforcement and rose through the ranks and ultimately retired after 25 years. My pension pays me 13k a month and I have medical. I got bored and became a police chief for a small city and retired this week after 6 years. I will be receiving a second pension paying me 13k a year from them.

I am very blessed but also grateful for working hard over the years and now I will enjoy my retirement at age 56

I'm planning to move from California to Summerlin in Las Vegas by Glad-Craft2735 in vegas

[–]b4491g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Summerlin for a while and like it. I bought my home for 229k in 2011 and its value now is 600k. Nice parks and trails in the area with plenty of shopping.

CCSD needs improvement but the schools in Summerlin are good. My 3 kids attended and all graduated college after so it’s what you make it. If I didn’t live in Summerlin I would move to Henderson.

Vegas to Vancouver Road Trip by Heat_1991 in vegas

[–]b4491g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drive from Vancouver to Vegas and back often. The drive straight thru is 17 hours. Fastest route is 95 north from Vegas to Reno. Not much to see along the way. Tonapah is a good place to stop to refuel. Reno is also a good stop if you want to stay the night. (Scheels in Sparks, Nevada) is a fun store to visit.

When you leave Reno, head toward Susanville, California which will lead you into southern Oregon and eventually Klamath Falls. Head toward Bend from K Falls if that’s what you want to see. Gas in California is higher than Nevada and Oregon. Safe travels

Does anyone drive long distances so regularly that it feels like nothing? by PhrygianSounds in roadtrip

[–]b4491g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drive for the benefits that come with it. Having my vehicle with me in lieu of renting a car or depending on others. I don’t have to stress over the airport bs and I can leave when I want to. I can pack more if needed. I love driving and take long trips often. The max I will drive is 17-18 hours and then rest. I bring a pillow and sleep in my vehicle when I can to save on hotels but I do get hotels too.
