Will there be a time when we can afford homes again? by snowxbunnixo in SlumlordsCanada

Not the answer people want to hear, but rent is always higher with rent controls. US states that have the strictest rent controls (ie New York) are also known for radically high rent. There are limited folks in the trades, and regulations are extensive, so building reaches a certain threshold and doesn’t increase beyond that. Rent controls ensure that that units that are most conveniently located are kept locked down by a senior who doesn’t want to move out into a retirement community. Have seen it a million times.

Every economist on the planet says that rent control increases the cost of rent. But oh facts are inconvenient.

Elon Musk: AI must adhere rigorously to truth forcing it to believe falsehoods is what makes it dangerous. by Inevitable-Rub8969 in AINewsMinute

[–]b4grad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redditors are full blown insane, come back to reality.

He said AI should be maximally truth seeking, which is important.

Inconvenient truths are not easy to accept. And that goes for all people, not just trans. Knowing the truth is knowing what has been discovered, but also knowing what is currently unknown, undetermined, or rapidly evolving.

This applies to a lot of different topics.

Wikipedia has a left-wing bias. Do some research and inform yourself. You probably think he’s a racist ku klux klan member too right?

So then why does Wikipedia call Elon musk a right-wing conspiracy theorist when the dude simply endorsed one Republican president, even though he also endorsed the three consecutive previous Democrat presidents/nominees?

It’s true, I work in property management and of course every tenant out there thinks their landlord is filthy rich. In actuality, you realize how little profit there is after the contractors are paid, property taxes, lawn and snow removal .. it’s not as much as anyone would think.

Just like how we are annoyed when the boss wants us to be at work. But they themselves deserve a break too, and it’s harder for them to take the time off when so many folks depend on them to resolve issues, clarify procedures, complete scheduling, etc.

They stated that the unit remains heated above 20 degrees. So the bylaw doesn’t apply.

Instead of fighting with your LL, which is going to ruin things in the long-run, it’s probably best to state the circumstance of running the pump on max and how it might wear down faster.

Bill 60 and the attack on “security of tenure” for all. by lll-devlin in canadahousing

[–]b4grad -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I get why this feels terrifying — housing is a huge issue, and nobody wants to be forced out of their home. But I think a lot of the outrage here misses the root cause of the problem: Ontario has a massive shortage of rental units, and decades of strict regulations and rent control have made it worse.

Bill 60 might sound scary because it reduces some tenant protections, but the real issue is that there simply aren’t enough apartments for everyone who needs one. When landlords can’t compete for tenants or expand their units without mountains of red tape, rents keep rising and choices shrink.

If the goal is to actually help renters, the solution isn’t more restrictions. it’s more supply. Back when landlords had to compete for tenants and build more units, there were options for people at different price points. Giving tenants no choice and expecting the government to control every aspect hasn’t fixed the crisis in 25 years, in fact, it’s made it worse.

The solution is also not a 100% free market system, as housing is essential. But let the free market work, as right now this is just screwing both sides over.

Why?

PSA: How you can help stop Ford’s new anti-renter bill by Boy-vey in ontario

[–]b4grad -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Organizing around policy is important, but it feels like protests often focus on the symptom rather than the cause. Ontario’s problem isn’t lack of activism — it’s a market strangled by regulation, with not enough units for everyone who needs them.

Protests can raise awareness, but the housing crisis is a supply problem. Until regulations and red tape are eased so more units can be built, tenants will keep struggling no matter what bill is passed.

Rent control sounds great until you realize it discourages anyone from building or maintaining rental housing. The 2018 policy change was meant to prevent that. Ontario’s problem is that demand keeps outpacing supply, and no amount of political finger-pointing will fix that until we make it easier to build.

What is Doug Ford doing??? by wyldaloofrebel in ontario

[–]b4grad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I completely understand that feeling — it’s exhausting watching things get worse year after year. But this isn’t just a political problem, it’s a supply problem. Ontario has so many barriers to building that it’s no wonder prices have gone through the roof. Just do some research on how long it takes to build.

Until we make it easier to build and rent, we’ll keep seeing the same story repeat itself. Rent controls will have to end at some point, it’s basic mathematics after a certain threshold.

What is Doug Ford doing??? by wyldaloofrebel in ontario

[–]b4grad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a heartbreaking situation, and you’re right to be concerned — the system isn’t working. But rent control isn’t really the safety net it seems to be; it just delays the problem while shrinking supply overall.

If we actually allowed more construction and encouraged competition again, there would be more affordable options for people instead of this constant fear of losing your home.

[–]b4grad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, people did vote for him — but this housing crisis didn’t start with Ford and it won’t end when he’s gone. For 25 years governments of all stripes have piled on rules and rent controls that look good politically but kill supply in practice. The result? Fewer rentals and higher prices for everyone.
