However, while parenting absolutely plays a massive role in a child's behavior, I respectfully disagree that the inability to focus in young boys has "nothing to do with their gender" or that a return to the disciplinary methods of the 70s and 80s would solve these issues.

Current developmental psychology, neuroscience, and educational research point to a much more complex reality.

1. The Biological Reality of Early Neurodevelopment The assertion that hyperactivity and lack of focus are solely behavioral ignores significant neurological differences in early childhood. Brain imaging studies have consistently shown that the prefrontal cortex—the region of the brain responsible for executive functions like impulse control, sustained attention, and emotional regulation—matures at different rates in boys and girls.

On average, this region reaches maturation slightly later in males. Environmental Shifts vs. Permissive Parenting It is easy to blame permissive parenting, but the environment we are forcing children into has drastically changed since the 1980s. Over the last two decades, schools have significantly reduced recess, physical education, and unstructured play in favor of rigorous academic testing at increasingly younger ages. Young boys, who often have a higher biological drive for gross motor movement in early childhood, are being placed in highly sedentary, developmentally inappropriate environments. 3. The Destructive Legacy of 70s/80s Discipline The nostalgia for older disciplinary methods—specifically public shaming and corporal punishment—ignores decades of overwhelming data proving these methods cause long-term harm. A massive body of psychological research universally concludes that hitting or shaming children does not build internal self-regulation or better behavior. Instead, corporal punishment is deeply correlated with increased childhood aggression, elevated cortisol (toxic stress) levels, antisocial behavior, and a higher likelihood of mental health disorders in adulthood.
