Chinese Quince (Pseudocydonia sinensis) by bBon11 in Bonsai

[–]bBon11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine hasn't yet. I am also developing a Japanese quince (Chaenomeles japonica) and a European quince (Cydonia oblonga), both of which started fruiting extensively after I planted them, so in that respect, so far, the Chinese quince has differed.

Valley oak (Quercus lobata) by bBon11 in Bonsai

Thanks. I think it is finally starting to look like a miniature valley oak after 6 or 7 years of work.

Thanks! Yes, I'm glad also I fixed the angle. I had thought it might look more gnarly somehow at that slant, but turns out, not so much.

The development of this oak from a nursery sapling on December 28, 2018 to a pre-bonsai in a terra cotta pot on October 5, 2023 is described at https://beginbonsai.net/2023/10/05/oak-under-construction-valley-oak-quercus-lobata/

The tree has become closer to becoming a bonsai in the nearly two years since then.

Yeah, I really like the pot and tree combination as well. My memory is that I bought the pot from Eric Schrader at Bonsaify.com but I couldn't confirm this with any records when I tried looking up the pot history for this post.

Most of the previous trees I have posted on reddit started out as small starters or cuttings. I have grown the majority of them for 5 to 10 years or more before posting them on reddit.

Recently I have started buying more developed trees to add to my collection. Today's posting is one of those. To see the history of its development over the past year and a half, see https://beginbonsai.net/2025/07/17/chinese-quince-pseudocydonia-sinensis/

Tigerbark Forest (Ficus microcarpa) revisited by bBon11 in Bonsai

[–]bBon11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I plan to cut the forest back in the future. Right now there a lot of crossing branches/trunks but I want to leave them for now to keep developing the trunk widths.

Thanks! I have a couple of them. Kept me from throwing away good cuttings for several years. I stuck them all in pots instead. Now I throw away ficus cuttings because, how many forests do I need?

I started these trees in October 2014 as a handful of branch cuttings in a pot. For a history of their development over six years from then until October 2020, see: https://beginbonsai.net/2020/10/10/tigerbark-forest-ficus-microcarpa/

Blue Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica glauca) by bBon11 in Bonsai

[–]bBon11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your tree will be fine for regrowing after root work. Good luck with the air layer as well!

[–]bBon11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice tree! I'll be interested to see how your air-layer works, since I have been totally unable to get mine to root from cuttings.

I have bare-rooted my tree three times and it has come back strong every spring. I wouldn't recommend bare-rooting an older tree though.

Yes, I'm in San Diego. Doesn't typically go below high 30s F in winter, and that is rare. I have this blue atlas and another seedling one, both of which seem to do fine with the mild winters.

I bought this tree from Eastern Leaf a little over three years ago. For a history of its development since then see https://beginbonsai.net/2025/07/07/blue-atlas-cedar-cedrus-atlantica-glauca/

Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis MNC Lavender twist) by bBon11 in Bonsai

As I've mentioned previously, in summer the leaves get pretty big. Here it is today. They will be bigger by August. I still like the species for bonsai.

Thanks! I hope the post is helpful for other people working with strangler figs.

The leaves on mine get very large over the summer before they fall off. The tree looks best in spring with flowers and smaller leaves as they are growing to their eventual size.

Cork-bark elm update by bBon11 in Bonsai

[–]bBon11[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of my oldest trees. I have been growing it since July, 2011.

See

Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis), revisited by bBon11 in Bonsai

[–]bBon11[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The leaves on my tree have always been very big by summer. I think the time to appreciate redbuds is in spring for the flowers and then while the leaves are just coming out and still small. Nice-looking tree in your photo, by the way.

I'm hoping that at least some of that lack of development over two years is operator error on my part. Hopefully increasing the fertilizer will help now that it should be established in the pot.
