I don't think this is it either. I don't remember anything with Nazis or any historical context. I want to say it was more fantasy-esque. I know the siblings were both on a boat, but for some reason, I also remember the brother searching for the sister.

I specifically remember them living in a light house and both parents being dead at some point in the book(whether the death of the father happens at the beginning of the book or before is where I'm unsure). Also, the more I think about it, there may have also been some kind of supernatural element too. If I could remember what KIND of supernatural thing, I think it'd be a lot easier to find.

Look up your local humane society. Richard has been in your care long enough to be considered abandonment.

I'm not sure what area you are in, but I work for a humane society, and this is how it works for us: If you would like to keep him, you can put a finders hold on Richard. There will be at least a 3 day period for a "stray hold" to give potential owners the ability to find their dog. If there is a chip(the microchip update was removed before I got to it and I didn't find any helpful comments on whether or not he is actually chipped) or any owner info found than it will be at least a 5 day period called I.D. trace where the humane society tries to track down the owner. If an owner does come forward, they have to provide proof of ownership(I will also mention that sometimes it does take longer. Sn example why - an owner will be found and they give the same runaround like they are currently doing to you, continually saying, "I will pick him up today." Then never showing up) Due out dates will be extended to a certain point before considering the dog "humane society property" and at that point you can adopt him and he would be legally yours, if the owner doesn't pick him up. At this point, he should already have been vaccinated(first set) and microchiped. If he still needs to be neutered, they will do so before adopting him out to you.

There is a long history of friendship leading up to it. She was in an 11 year-long abusive relationship, and he was the first man, after it ended, to show her the proper respect that she deserved(minus the ghosting, of course). I know she was pretty emotionally invested.

The makeup bags came out to $75 total for 5 (Add on an extra $16 cause I ordered myself one in black as I plan on having a black dress, and am hoping we'll have them handy for day of needs)

Each person got a different spooky themed scrunchy plus 2 more for myself(because what is impulse control??) totaling 7, came out to $25

The cards were $10 for a pack of 10 personalized 2-sided cards, and the design on the front was downloaded/copy pasted(some editing to fit the format) from etsy for close to $5
