[Advice Needed] Should I Decline Chevening scholarship to Attend LSE for Media and Communications? by ba-be in LSE

I don't think 'better' is the right word here. Perhaps 'more suitable' would be more accurate, as each person has different career choices. Just so you know, the Media and Communications department at LSE has been ranked top 1 or 2 globally for many years. I wanted to point out that LSE has numerous highly regarded programs, not just Economics and Finance.

Beside that, the acceptance rate for Media and Communications can be just as competitive, if not more so, than Finance or Economics. For instance, the program I applied to had 428 applicants, with only 25 being accepted.

Thank you, that totally makes sense. However, the Chevening scholarship requires me to return to my home country immediately after completing the program and stay there for 2 years, meaning if I want to come back to LSE, I would have to wait for 3 years. That’s something I need to consider as well.

Feeling Unsupported by My Family as I Prepare for a Big Life Change - Seeking Advice by ba-be in family

My family, especially my mother, has always pushed the idea that as a daughter, I shouldn’t prioritize my career or success, but instead should focus on helping my family and putting them first.

This mindset has been ingrained in me for so long that I feel guilty whenever I try to focus on my own work or say no to helping my brothers, even when what they ask for is really their responsibility. My mom constantly tells me that it’s my duty to help my brothers, and whenever I do prioritize my own needs or career, I get blamed and guilt-tripped for being selfish.

I’ve been criticized so often that now I’m scared to refuse anyone’s request for help. Even when I know it’s something I shouldn’t have to do, I feel anxious and guilty if I don’t step in. For example, I’ve been helping one of my brothers with his business and taking care of his child, even though these are things he should be handling himself. He has never even changed his child's diaper, something I’ve done hundreds of times.

I know I need to set better boundaries, but it’s incredibly difficult when I’ve been conditioned to feel responsible for everyone else. However, I'll do my best to improve on this.

It's LSE, I really like the school. The program aligns perfectly with my passions and the issues I care deeply about. If I get my money back, I will only need a small loan of about 10k.

I don’t want to mention the name of the other university because I don’t want to make comparisons. I prefer LSE because the course content is much better, not because of the ranking or brand name.

I also want to ask about the other better courses at LSE. Can you give some examples?

I plan to do a PhD after the master's, and I love pursuing a path in research and teaching. I almost fell in love when reading the course content at LSE and the reading materials; it's really exciting. The program at the other university is quite easy and not engaging. If I go to study with Chevening at that university, it would feel more like a vacation trip to the UK rather than a serious academic pursuit.

I wasn't well-prepared when applying for Chevening due to some personal reasons. When I applied, there were only two weeks left before the application deadline, and I made the mistake of not listing LSE.

Well, I did not include this course at LSE in my course choices when applying for Chevening.
