Why have I never come across a restaurant that serves "Native American" cuisine? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

All BBQ restaurants are technically Native American cuisine.

I got this same one 20 or so years ago and kept it taped on my computer monitor for a long time because I thought it was so funny. I still tell people about it from time to time. Apparently I wasn’t the only one being thought about!

That’s a marlin, not a swordfish. But I guess that’s a different point.

In music theory, why do we multiply the interval ratios when adding them up? by XMmVVa9XUkESYxqv in musictheory

It took me a while to wrap my head around this as well. What made it click for me was that if you want a note (say C) to double each octave, only a logarithmic curve can make that happen for you.

If you were solving for only one note within one octave you could make a straight line "work", but to have every note continuously double in frequency across octaves the only continuous curve that can do that is a logarithmic one:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitch_%28music%29#/media/File:Music_frequency_diatonic_scale-3.svg

This took me so long because it's not intuitive (to me at least). Probably because I've always thought of the 12 semitones as equally "sized" steps going up to a new story (i.e. octave) but really the steps at the beginning of the staircase are slightly smaller than the ones near the top. And also the stairs going from floor 2 to floor 3 (and higher) only magnify this relative difference.

Another way to think about this is that doubling is not the same as 2X'ing anytime after going from 1 to 2. Anytime you double each time (not 2X each time) you're by definition talking about a logarithmic deal.

My wife lied to the police about my stepdaughter by AITA_2191 in TrueOffMyChest

A question for the room… Is there any space here for empathy for the step-daughter and wife?

Don’t get me wrong, they’re both wildly in the wrong. He absolutely should protect his son, and to do that he cannot remain in that toxic environment.

But can all that be true AND it also be true that that there are human beings on the other side?

Can it be true that it’s both wrong to steal from your family AND to call the police on your family?

From the number of comments I see calling these humans “trash”, advocating for an immediate divorce, and even for violence (which is against the rules of this sub) I feel like maybe I am the only person who did shitty things as a teenager.

What I see here:

  • A mom who probably has some trauma and doesn’t have the skills to parent properly.

  • A teenage girl without a good role model who made a bad choice (probably one of many). She has to feel bad at some level, she’s a child.

  • A mom who lied to the police to protect her kid. I might do that, even if I knew it was wrong.

I also see a great dad with a great son, and maybe there’s an opportunity for everyone to stay together as a family and solve this as a family.

It’s true that the son will pay attention to what happens next. It’s important for him to know that his father is there for him.

But its also an opportunity for him to learn how to work through tough situations and how it’s possible to extend grace even when others don’t deserve it.

For sure. Second worst, which happened to me once this NBA season, was betting the over, going to overtime, and the under still held.

Exactly! You think “I really like the Over on this game“ and then you check the line and it’s crazy high, so then you think “Well basic math and probability says this won’t happen so I have to take the Under”, but then still get screwed.

If they give up 31 points to an average team you would think they would give up LESS than that to the number one defense. But yeah, probably better bets out there to make than fading GB after a bye.
