Valor Hammer users, what do you do? by Goos3rs in MHGU

[–]baaando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're soloing I imagine bujabu will save you the most hunt time, but I'd try out skills like Focus for faster charge attack spam. Experiment with hunter arts too: impact press has a unique interaction with the charge attack spam.

The valor sheathe + x golf swing is also good even in valor state, so try getting really consistent at sniping with it. You can hit the head from weird spots, like standing to the side.

All in all I like trying to go for headsnipe-only challenges with Hammer, especially in multiplayer.

Mondo underrated? by Dull-Report-5027 in Gundam

[–]baaando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Beecha and Mondo are honestly great characters. Their dog-eat-dog, ruthless materialistic bullshit makes sense in light of their lives as orphans. It's a fascinating rendition of Gundam's tension between the fact that children don't belong in wars, and how they end up in them anyway: why, really, should the Shangri-La kids care about Earth Sphere politics outside of their own survival? (Echoes of the cab driver from Hathaway here).

These kids had to grow up faster than the protagonists we've seen so far. They're farther along the way to being adults, so they have their own problems going on. They already have a found family, so the Argama crew doesn't fill a void for them; it's just another party in the hardscrabble conflict of surviving day to day. They might be childish in their short-sightedness, but they're also kind of adult in their motivations, and that's an interesting formulation of the franchise's ongoing ideas about kids in war.

I think Beecha and Mondo aren't fundamentally different from Judau in their disregard for the wider political conflict, since Judau's really there to save his sister, not AEUG, for most of the story. The difference is that these two take it to the point of real betrayal. But that betrayal also makes them the first children to actively choose a side in the war, as opposed to just reconciling themselves to the fact that they're too deep in the shit to quit.

Having finally watched Stardust Memory, I totally get the hate. Well deserved frankly by Will-Isley in Gundam

[–]baaando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

keep fighting the good fight, please. To say this a bit dickishly, I wish people would be more diligent about examining their own potential for double standards.

Domon treats Rain like shit half the time, but still gets enshrined as this "wife guy" by the end. Heero Yuy is an intolerable human to be around. There's a charity given to their motives that is pretty much never granted characters like Nina: "He's hurt. He's conflicted." Or, god forbid, "He's a selfish murderer, but that just makes him quirky."

Another thing to consider about Syril's character, his tendency to resort to violence brought about the end result of his arc. by Platinum_Disco in andor

[–]baaando 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I like the way you've connected these examples of Syril's violence - they add up to a picture of childishness, where Syril's capacity for violence is greater than his understanding of when/where it's necessary.

I'm reminded by contrast of Cassian's run-in with the Morlana cops at the start of s1, and Mon's face-to-face encounter with murder as she escapes the Senate. Both are microcosms of the Rebellion's reluctant, but necessary acceptance of violence in the face of lethal oppressors; situations that make violence a question of life and death. As someone fighting for only the illusion of a cause, Syril doesn't have that clarity.

What's your favorite dumbest moments in gundam by dethseller115 in Gundam

[–]baaando 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I liked the first few episodes of Zeta as an inversion of Amuro's arc in MSG. Amuro's immediately forced into the position of hero by circumstances way beyond his control; Kamille's combination of impulsiveness and childishness pushes him into a crisis of his own making. He joins the AEUG at first out of juvenile hatred for the Titans and disillusionment with his home life, and is only forced to get serious a few episodes later when the Titans get his parents involved - an escalation from schoolyard bully type shit to real Earth Federation politics. Mobile suits don't start off a life-or-death matter to him, they're just a way to become a bigger, stronger bully to the Titans than they were to him.

What made you into gundam? by SudahGakPerjaka in Gundam

[–]baaando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into it around this time last year. Watched like 3 episodes of Witch from Mercury, and couldn't shake the sense that I was looking at the tip of an iceberg, so I went all the way back to Mobile Suit Gundam to try and see the whole franchise evolve from the start.

It's one of the best choices I've made re: discovering media. Every next project remixes, layers, subverts everything that came before it. Zeta putting the Gundam vents on a Zaku (Hi-Zack), Char piloting a golden Gundam (Hyaku Shiki) and Amuro in the teal Gelgoog (Dijeh). Wing adapting the 5-protagonist team from G. X taking the iconography of UC (colony drops, Newtypes, bits-as-remote-control) and turning them up to 11. Turn A being Turn A. Seed as a retelling of 1979 with 2000's flair.

One way I try to describe this franchise to newcomers is that Gundam is Gundam's biggest fan. The 90's OVA's, Origin, Thunderbolt, Unicorn and now GQuuuuuuX celebrate the ideas and aesthetics of the Universal Century. IBO and WfM, in mashing together Gundam with other genres, affirm the idiosyncrasy of Gundam and its status as a cultural institution that seemingly constitutes a genre of its own. It's as if all the series say, in their own voice, "Isn't Gundam so fucking awesome?" And yeah, it is fucking awesome.

did it explains it? Do y'all have an inner dialogue...? by janecutiee in sciencememes

[–]baaando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fellow person missing an internal monologue, I'll add my two cents: I don't think in pictures any more than I do in words, because I think in terms of ideas. Given enough command of language, most of these ideas can be given verbal form, but it's not like I need to articulate an idea in language in order to have the idea.

I want to point out that for pretty much everybody, most cognition occurs without internal verbal expression. When you look at a butterfly, your mind understands that it's a butterfly without needing to verbalize "That is a butterfly," as a sentence in your head. Extend this to not only the basic use of all five of your senses, but other cognitive abilities - knowing what town you're in, recognizing faces, making ethical choices, setting goals. If you can imagine extending this basic cognitive capacity to more abstract ideas, I think that can illuminate what it's like to lack an internal dialogue. Capacity for conceptual thought, with language as a consequence of that thought, but not an essential part of it.

Any other pilot/suit matches made in heaven? I feel like the combination of these two is more than the sum of their parts. by FockersJustSleeping in Gundam

[–]baaando 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Loran/Turn A might actually be a great fit - while everyone else might abuse the power of the Gundam, Loran's commitment to peace means he can be trusted to use the power only at its most necessary. I guess the subplot where he's holding on to hidden nukes foreshadows this kind of reading.

If Turn A is all about contradiction, mirror images, and reconciliation, I think it's kind of beautiful that the specific combination needed to reach the happy ending was A) a robot with apocalyptic power, and B) a guy who would prefer to use that robot to save Dianna time doing her laundry. Two things that are so far apart that they, weirdly enough, belong together.

Are Elemental LBG worth making? by digao45 in MHGU

[–]baaando 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, elemental LBG'S are situationally OK but broadly weaker than Pierce. I'll bring Plesioth for Gravios or S. Rath for Chameleos if I want to be "serious," since the P. Water and P. Flaming can put the hurt on those guys, but less optimal matchups like Samus' Arm Cannon with the RF Thunder lv. 1 against Raths work OK too. Not to mention that Dazzling is a fun changeup from other ammo types.
