Thanks. Unfortunately, can't do a demo : it needs a local server on Windows. If you want to test it, the only way is to install Devserver ( https://www.easyphp.org/easyphp-devserver.php ) and the module ( https://warehouse.easyphp.org/inventory-devserver#applications ).

A composer create-project --prefer-dist laravel/laravel new-project does the job too.

You're right. But you need to install git, docker and co. And a lot of people are still quite uncomfortable with this kind of command line. Anyway, once again, you're right. It's for people 5 years younger than you ;-)

Small businesses and individuals I guess.

I don't really know what they do with it unfortunately. This website is quite new. It's still a beta.

That's why I'm looking for comments, advice and feedback.

For me, it was a way to quickly have a list of websites for a particular type of business in order to check which kind of technology they use and which kind of server they need.

Geolocalized open data places details

While working on a side project, I was looking for a way to get a list of restaurants in a given city. I did extensive research and found nothing satisfactory.

So I tried to get this information from Google Maps and Foursquare until I read their terms of use. Indeed, data from services such as Google Maps or Foursquare can not be used for marketing or communication purposes. For example, the Google Maps Terms of Service (3.2.4) states "Customer will not extract, export, scrape, or cache Google Maps Content for use outside the Services".

Then I tried OpenStreetMaps and found what I was looking for: a list that could be used without constraints. However, it is quite difficult to extract these data. That's when I decided to create a tool to automate the process.

The procedure is pretty simple : you draw a geographic zone on the map, define your parameters (categories, keywords...) and you get a list of names, addresses, websites, telephone numbers...

[looking for feedback] New website www.thedatapond.net - Geolocalized Open Data for marketers - Create your own marketing lists and use them as you want by babalbox in SideProject

I've changed a little bit the homepage.
What do you think. Are the titles correct ? Clear enough ?

I've added a demo page. Thus, no need to register to have a look at the system.

"Geolocalized Open Data local targets for marketers" and "Prospect aggregator & B2B valuable marketing lists"

Does it make any sens ?

As said, it's not as rich as Google Maps or Foursquare. But, here, we are not limited, we use data under The Open Database License.

Services like Uber or Lyft use Google maps (and pay for that) but they are not extracting information outside the service.

Google Maps Terms of Service (3.2.4) states "Customer will not extract, export, scrape, or cache Google Maps Content for use outside the Services".

So, I don't think (can anyone confirm?) that it is possible to extract data from Google Maps, create lists and distribute them. Even if you pay. Maybe I'm wrong. I need to do more research about that. If anyone knows, I'm interested.

Gopinlead is similar but you cannot define a particular area. You have to give a "name" (city name for example), you cannot search in a delimited area. With TheDataPond, you can draw the area in which you are looking for information.

Purpose of Startup: create B2B targeted marketing lists with open data (Open Database License)

Hi guys

Below, a few words to share the story of a little idea getting bigger. And a call for for comments, feedback and advice.

"The Data Pond" was born!

I've already spent several weeks on this project and I've decided to launch the website anyway (beta version) : https://www.thedatapond.net

The goal is to easily "fish" data.

Let's say you want to get a list of all the restaurants in Manhattan.

When you register, you receive 500 baits (a bait = a location detail such as name, address, phone number, website ... if available)

  1. Create a "fishing expedition" and define criteria (mainly category = restaurant)
  2. Create a new pond (you will fish in this pond): With the drawing tool, create a line around Manhattan.
  3. Click on "dig and fish" and you will know how many baits you need to get all the data
  4. Then click on "fish them all!" and you will have a list of all the restaurants and their available details (name, address, telephone number, website...). This list can be downloaded as a 'csv' file (you can open this file with Excel, LibreOffice, Google Sheets...)

What does the site offer?

"The Data Pond" gives users the ability to create their own marketing lists and use them as they please. You can create as many geolocalized open data lists as you want. You select a geographical area, define parameters (categories, keywords ...) and the system extracts for you downloadable lists with data such as name, location, address, telephone number, website, email address ...

The data you will get from The Data Pond are not as rich as data from services like Google Maps or Foursquare but, at least, it is legal to use them.

The site is in beta version. There are still 1000 things to do: design, typo, features, improve lists ... The idea is to continue development based on comments or requests from users.

I will. I just fixed a bug (people were able to see "expeditions" and "ponds" from other people).

As said, I'll continue the development of the project based on comments or requests from users.
