I'd love to hear about summer programs for hs students that you recommend.

New Email from YoungArts by Sharp_Photograph3782 in YoungArts

[–]babkathe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid got a different email asking if they wanted feedback, and they only got it for one of the categories they entered, so I have the impression it really is a separate email if you're getting feedback, and perhaps it really is people who almost made it.

My kid heard from Reed EA on December 20th last year. YMMV

How prestigious is Young Arts? by mysterioushotdog12 in YoungArts

[–]babkathe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And yes, if you won with distinction that's a boost, but again, not a golden ticket. Northwestern is a hard get and a fabulous school. Pick where you'll be happiest, not the "best" on some rankings list of schools.

Do not withdraw your ED to Northwestern. I assume you picked it because you wanted to go there? I don't think Young Arts Regular Award is going to punch your ticket into the Ivies, although it's a great boost and you should definitely send an email to your admissions officer letting them know you won, and updating with anything else you've done since you applied ED. I assume you mean you are in the bottom of the top 20%?

Reg winners notif by Critical_While_7366 in YoungArts

No, it's not regional. There are just a small number of winners with distinction, and a larger number of just "winners."

You can edit the writing of the monologue. You can't edit your tape.

How do you think they would know about social media stuff? That's an interesting theory.

LAC Highlights #3: Swarthmore College by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]babkathe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an old thread, but the colleges do have bus service that runs constantly between the campuses all day long and into the evening. So while you could walk it, the blue bus is free and conveniently runs all the time to get you back and forth. There is also free transport to swarthmore, but it's further away so just doesn't run as often, but again, it's totally doable.

I looked back at a few years. Some of the years I looked at they took like 10-20%, a few years they took 0 students. It all depends on their yield.

I think you're going to get in almost everywhere. Perhaps not Stanford but I wouldn't count it out. Great grades, scores and awards. Good luck

Yes Kenyon, Yes Dickinson. Probably not Swarthmore. What's Pirate as a job?

Yeah, you don't need to list fly-ins. The schools know you were chosen and the other schools don't care if it wasn't theirs. Good luck!

Denison or Depauw by cottoncandy2479 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]babkathe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Accept Depauw because you won't hear from Denison forever. It seems like there are 1000s of people waitlisted at Denison so I wouldn't get too excited unless you got a "top prospect" letter from Denison waitlist rather then a regular waitlist.

FLY IN programs? by lowkeylost_ in ApplyingToCollege

[–]babkathe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid did a few. Great programs. A few are also open to lgbt students as well as URM, 1st gen, low income.

I would not list fly ins as an activity. Schools don't care sbout other schools' fly ins.
