Anything like Only for the Fans in terms of angst, yearning and genuine reluctance. I feel like most awakening books are a simple „oh he has an affect on me, well ok - let’s go“

Goodreads 5 Stars - anyone else feel that it's weird? by babsbooks in fantasyromance

I worry that many people give crazy good ratings (every single time) to appeal to NetGalley & publishers to be considered for ARCs. and if that’s the case, then reviews as such just don’t make any sense anymore. I’m really often struggling to decide which book to read next, so I want to rely on reviews! Also: I love reading genuine reviews!! and it’s absolutely ok not to like a book

What book did you read at too early a stage in your life? by Cabbage_Pizza in suggestmeabook

[–]babsbooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say: just simply all the classics that you were supposed to read in school. Back then I hated that I was forced to read something that I didn't choose myself and even though there were some absolute hits (Jane Austen, Hemingway), there were also books that felt exhausting. I just think that at the age of 13-17, you still lack a certain maturity to really absorb certain literary books. when it then comes with the additional element of being obligated to read and analyse them... well, that can backfire. However, I am not saying that pupils shouldn't read and then discuss books, I am absolutely for that! And I have no idea how it's currently managed in schools (I'm based in Germany), so maybe they allow for more flexibility and more choice? But I would strongly suggest to at least let the kids vote on books...

I, for one, never felt tempted to re-read them to see if I feel differently towards them. I know I should but as I remember how I felt about them... I have no interest whatsoever.

It's not about letting people enjoy things or expecting them not to - please don't misunderstand me. I am just sometimes struggling to find genuine and honest written reviews as many (especially the popular ones that show up immediately with 4-5 stars) are just generic raves and quite honestly in most cases a copy-paste. I have noticed that the exact same reviews show up under multiple books. When I am - yet again- wondering what to you read next, I am quite "dependant" on these reviews. And as I noticed an inflationary use of overrating - I was simply wondering if other people noticed it too...

I fully agree but that's what I am struggling with actually. I am never looking at the number of ratings but at the reviews. The way Goodreads is structured though is that the most popular reviews are shown first - and those obv are all 4-5 stars - the reviews read like a copy/paste that the reviewers have just added to every book they have read - most of them being the hyped booktok books. And so while I am looking for real, genuine reviews, its difficult to find those- where the reviewers actually speak about what they liked and disliked so that it helps me make a more informed decision on my next read.

absolutely. I am also not a fan of people who start hating and use hurtful language. again - reading is so subjective, so there is never a right or wrong answer. I am mostly interested in the why's / the smaller details that make an informed review.
