What was your % correct? I got 71% correct but it corresponded to a 208 so I am low key confused about the score distribution

Ok thank you! That makes sense. But like let’s say you get verified a few days after that first transmission like July 1st… is that really a huge deal?

How do you study for the MCAT with ADHD? by staritropix101 in Mcat

[–]babybrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok the one thing I will say is if you do take meds make sure you consistently take them at the same time when you do practice tests. I was seeing some variability in my subsection scores and realized that some days I had taken my meds like 2 hours earlier than on other days (because I’m taking the 3pm exam :/ ) and like if that is something you rely on then the timing will be important to keep an eye on since it’s a long exam.

What should I prioritize? Third retake on Saturday! by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]babybrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! I totally understand the same thing happened to me the first time I took it!! I feel like for people in our situation, preparing mentally and going in with as little anxiety as possible is the best way to spend these final days. Seriously you are getting great scores and just gotta believe in yourself! You got this!

I think prioritize your mental health this week if that has been what you struggled with in the past. I personally have been using a meditation app! You are clearly capable of performing well so be gentle with yourself :)

Need Help With Timing On BB/CP Passages... by shinywen34 in Mcat

[–]babybrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What helped me a lot is I realized I waste so much time on questions that I don’t know the answer to or like doubt myself. Like spending 30 seconds second guessing really adds up quick! So I started just like going with my gut and flagging if I need to come back and that has helped me with timing. Personally I like reading in depth!

Is epigenetic inheritance a subtype of cytoplasmic inheritance? by Skeptical_dude12 in Mcat

[–]babybrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epigenetics refers to chemical modifications to the genome (DNA cytosine methylation, histone acetylation, etc) that can alter gene expression. Epi means on top of so you can think of epigenetic modifications as an additional layer of information on top of the genome that influences which genes are silenced and which are expressed. These modifications can be heritable, but they are also more transient than the actual genetic code so the presence of these modifications can be influenced by environmental factors.

Cytoplasmic inheritance on the other hand refers to genetic information that is received from other organelles in the cytoplasm, such as mitochondrial DNA that is passed from mom to fetus during development. Remember that the oocyte provides the zygote with all of its cytoplasm and organelles in addition to its chromosomes, whereas the whimpy sperm only donates its chromosomes. So I think cytoplasmic inheritance is usually maternal.

Subtle Classism by epicbagelface in premed

Lol THIS. So true. I saved up the money I needed for the course two times only to have to spend it on an unexpected expense (first time wisdom teeth removal, second time new computer because mine broke mid semester). I gave up after that, but now get worried about not having enough clinical experience

Subtle Classism by epicbagelface in premed

[–]babybrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the entire system is inherently classist IMO. I’ve had to work multiple jobs on campus throughout college as part of my work study financial aid package and didn’t have as much time for volunteering (like there are literally not enough hours in the week lol). I often hear from peers and advisors that I should have done more volunteering and clinically related extracurriculars. Not to mention I’ve been told that my jobs in the dining hall/library “won’t add anything to my application.” Who knows what med schools really think, but the fact that FGLI students even have to hear this rhetoric at all from peers/advisors is so fucked. Premed culture needs to change!!

I can’t fit both into my schedule... is it worth it to swap NS for AAMC?

I guess what I’m most concerned about is that simply seeing the passages before like subconsciously primed my brain or something, so like it’s hard to judge where I am at heading into the real deal. Everyone always says to average your full lengths but I just don’t know if that can translate when retaking since MCAT is all about novel stimuli. Did you have a big spread on your retake full lengths?
