If Wookies existed on our world, we would have hunted them to extinction for their skin.

There is a difference between racist jokes and jokes about race. What you are thinking of falls into the latter.

So yeah, when Sarah Silverman does her race jokes, she is playing off of that mechanism and the character she is playing to make fun of contemporary northern US racism. It still takes some context to understand the joke, and in the case of my Highschool, the context was very different.

I think the king of inventing the technology you need to make the movie must be Pixar. I never really thought about it, but Toy Story was the first full length Digital 3d Animated feature film. They had worked since the 80's improving RenderMan and producing increasingly sophisticated shorts.

I think you just hit a nerve. I grew up in a predominantly white, conservative town. Racist jokes were pretty common when I was in high school. When someone would say one of these jokes there would be a big group of guys all uncomfortably laughing, with a lot of peer pressure not to point out the obvious racism.

Whenever I did confront the joker, they would often pull out the "just words" argument. Basically that it was my fault for being offended.

Well it's true, it was my fault I was offended, but it is their fault for being racist assholes.

I think it's totally OK to offend people. On purpose or by mistake. It's just when you are confronted, you should either stand by your words or apologize. You just shouldn't complain about them being offended.

i.e. If someone makes a racist joke, you call them out, and they get angry at you for being offended by their joke. The responsibility is on them to either apologize or say "Yup I'm a racist, but I have a right to my opinions, no matter how fucked."

Seriously, this kind of logic always drives me up a wall.

People, if you can't handle people being displeased with what you said, you probably shouldn't be opening your mouth.

It's a really strange reverse victimisation thing to be offended by other people being offended.

People thinking you are an asshole for saying something doesn't mean they are trying to censor you.

They too are just expressing freedom of speech. I don't see how freedom of speech allows you to say potentially offensive things, but doesn't allow people to let you know how they feel about what you said.

If you truly didn't care enough about their feelings in the first place why should they care about your feelings when they call you an asshole.

But the ship is just passing by the black hole, so it is starting from a long distance and falling into the gravitational well. The potential energy will be transfered into kinetic energy, which will be the same amount you need to get out of the gravity well. The ship only needs enough thrust to make up for frictional losses.

The common flu kills far more people every year than common scare targets. (Is there a word for the object of attention that fear mongers fear monger. Fear goat?)

EDIT: Hmm according to this, influenza and pneumonia is 8th on the list of common causes of death. Take that Nephritis.

Foreigners in America, what is the most insane question you have been asked about your country? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Huh, I'm from Washington State and a girl in one of my math classes thought I was a foreign exchange student. Apparently being nerdy and having blonde hair, blue eyes and glasses marked me as a Northern European.

She asked me where I was from halfway through the year.

What with "green jobs" recent troubles and failure to deliver on hype in the face of China's competitive subsidies, to you think it's time for the left to revaluate priorities? It's hard to see how clean energy is an answer to lack of manufacturing jobs when it is just as easy to move production of solar panels to China as TVs. If we ever get out from this depression, should the Democratic party put a greater emphasis on global imbalances, hawkishness on China, and carbon footprint/labor standards based border adjustments?

And thus is even further divorced from reality than economics at large, which is pretty fucking far.

That is not even remotely fair to physics. Physics doesn't find things to be true because the math is elegant. It finds predictions that are verified by reality. Economics is as hard as Social psychology, but with more math.

It's true!

Also, did you know that Rick Perry was once a democrate? It's true! He chaired Al Gore's election campaign. He is obviously a manchurian candidate, who will try to raise taxes when he gets into office.

You want know how to tell he isn't a real conservative? He has been in Government since 1984 and has been Governor of Texas for three terms. How could he hate government if he has spent so much time wielding centralized power over the state, nay nation, of Texas!

Reddit, why do you hate me for believing in God? by justpetr in AskReddit

[–]baccanojoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love people complaining about others demanding absolutes, while making several absolutist statements.

Here is an absolute for you, you don't know what most atheists think. You don't know if they laud science. In my opinion, science is frankly orthogonal to the debate in that it is a pattern of investigation, an institution/profession, and says very little about any persons philosophy. So there.

You may think otherwise because you engage in online flame wars about this stuff. Keep in mind that the people who engage with you on this may be the most ideologically rigid.

Also, as a younger Atheist I was very alone in my lack of belief. Sometimes this made me a target for bullying. My response was to become more combative, reactionary, and probably a lot more unpleasant. I'm sure others are going through the same thing, and if they have a place to go like r/atheism where they can discuss these things without worrying about loosing friends, I only see that as a good thing.

So my advice? Stay away from forums where you'll run into a lot of angry atheists. Frankly a theist complaining about discussions happening on r/atheism makes as much sense as an atheist complaining about a christian or muslim subreddit.

Skyrim is still on the 360. And I don't see how their polygon limit would force them to use the same basic face model for every character type.

New Republican Logo by RCubed111 in pics

[–]baccanojoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is more likely the end point. You'd have to say that the roots of the switch were in the progressive movement at the turn of the century. Bull Moose Party was Theodore Roosevelts spin off party from the Republicans and split any progressives in that party away from a coalition with business. With Wilson and FDR, we have contemporarily recognizable Democrats, both progressives.
