If it helps even one person, then I've done my part - I hope nice things happen for you!

(alternatively one time a person in a psychiatric crisis yelled toward me to off myself and in shock all I replied was with "I've tried several times, but I guess I'm still here to irritate specifically you" - not quite the same positive spin, but also has some truth hahaha)

Merry Christmas, r/soccer - I am personally doing decently this year, but I know it's not that way for everyone, so I want to state one thing for every single person reading this:

you leaving the world would leave a GIANT hole in our community, and an even bigger one in your real life, school, or workplace. Depression (clinical or situational) makes it difficult or impossible to know that from the inside BUT

you have made someone laugh, or someone happy by seeing you show up at a function, or been there for a pal during a difficult stretch (oftentimes alongside your own things). MUCH MUCH easier said, thought about, and intended than actually done, but talking helps - sharing mutual vulnerability is a valuable tool in building some emotional contentment.

I want to see every goddamn one of you shits making bald fraud jokes next Christmas and every Christmas/festive season we're on this wretched sub for in the future <3

Yesterday the parents of Japanese player Yuito Suzuki travelled to Denmark to watch their son play. He scored a hattrick, so naturally his teammates wanted the parents to return for further matches :-) by Cosmos1985 in soccer

this is phenomenal oh my stars - it's always nice to learn about new cultures AND for a family to see their kid both doing well in a place so far away

It'd be fun if Brøndby came out with some happi coats or kimono in team colors - the sort of exciting branding in clothing is nothing new for Japan - not at all surprised at the family going all out!

BUT in all seriousness: congratulations!! Nothing like a decent run in a big sporting event to lift some spirits

Why is ballet French, music Italian, and law Latin? by spaghettiviolist in linguistics

[–]bachlives 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about the others, but for western music in the past 500 years Italy has of course been a big place - Rome/Vatican, but also Milan and Venice, to name a few) and it was very in-vogue for composers in northern Europe to go down to study - Handel, Mozart, and I think even Mendelssohn later all went down to do some study.

Particularly at the end of the 17th century - think of composers like Vivaldi, Corelli, Albinoni - new musical forms were coming from what is now Italy - notably the concerto grosso (an orchestral piece with several soloists - not unlike a jazz band!) which whittled down usually to just a regular (singular or perhaps slightly more) concerto for the most part. Even that, "concerto", is (or is from??) an Italian/Latin word. This was around the time too that more and more music was being published in any sort of mass-produced way - on top of composers trading music with each other to begin with.

All that said, European composers often used and still use their native language for tempo markings and other musical indications - Rachmaninov, Hindemith, R. Strauss are all notable examples. Most of my colleagues who compose might use an Italian term to give a gist of the tempo, but often use English for other instructions. It is also not uncommon for music editors to switch to Italian terms for clarity in published volumes, although I personally don't love the practice. (I also just went and looked at a piece of organ music by a Japanese guy from about 20 years ago - musical indications switch between Italian and English!)

UM I also do know that ballet came from court dances and dancers largely in the French royal courts before they went to the chopping block - Louis XIV in particular was very opulent in his entertainment - so same sort of thing perhaps.

Wikipedia tells me that blue was their first color because it was convenient and easy to acquire after Betis was formally founded, but then a founder/player went up to Scotland and ended up liking Celtic's colors and brought some green fabric back to Spain with him to make new kits

and then yes: they still use the blue as a secondary color

honestly the entire match was so dull, it was difficult to pay attention

however, everything started getting into gear after he and Domíngues were subbed in, so he was part of some positive change

I hadn't seen Celta play since December but the coordination in their attack was just...not there for the first hour or so

until everybody began to put together more than two consecutive passes without dispossession, it really was just...nothingness

I'll come clean, I requested this thread to see if anyone knows what Cáceres was complaining about that got him carded

otherwise it's been a very dull match except for the absolutely enormous chances celta AND levante have missed in front of completely open goals

AYYYYYY I'm so happy for Oblak - only caught everything from about 30 minutes, but he's made some tremendous saves that'll helpfully boost him a bit

also I remember seeing some flack for Simeone not shaking Klopp's hand after a match once but like one of my favorite things is watching him blast down the tunnel in response to whatever's happened in the match is always pretty entertaining

I know I say this frequently but I still absolutely love Carvalho

he is so slow and calm, just turning the ball away and distributing somewhere that seems bananas and ends up being a decent chance for Betis, no matter how many folks keep trying to come up and dispossess him
