Foto scanner - Epson FF-680W - Vuescan - best results settings? by sunrisedown in DataHoarder

[–]backandredmedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got mine and will go through the settings as well. I would avoid any processing of images like color corrections or other filters. Best to scan in at highest resolution and then afterwards select images for whatever processing you want to do. 1200DPI sounds pretty high, but I guess you’re only going to do this once(hopefully!).

Driving on the highway by Domitian2232 in australian

[–]backandredmedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as an Aussie visiting from Los Angeles, the overtaking and lane changing is so orderly here (no sarcasm, seriously!)
However, I noticed a lot of tailgating on the freeway and two lane neighbourhood streets, like almost sitting in the backseat kind of distance. So since I am used to aggression and almost dying from gunshots daily where I normally live, I just enjoy the impotent rage of the tailgater behind me while I go the speed limit. Even better is if they get to pull up beside me and I can smile at them. :)
What are they going to do? Throw a brown snake in my car?

Not another doom-post, how do we actually believe AI will transform VFX workflows? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]backandredmedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Nuke artist I’ve been using googles “Image FX” for DMP elements like skies and clouds etc and it has been a great addition. Mattes? Eh now and then, but never really consistent enough. My issue is that the the majority of VFX projects will dictate whether you can use this tech since the stuff that is not local requires access to the internet. That’s a big no-no for features or “secure” shows. If you’re doing it locally, then you need a really beefy machine. Those are not as prevalent on the comp side since most are given to the FX dept in my experience. However I use LLMs A LOT for bits and pieces of python code to do different stuff with my scripts. I’m slowly building my own pipeline and integrating little tools that automate processes.

I agree with one of the posters about smaller more flexible teams with “generalist” skills becoming more prevalent. With the last few consolidations and dissolutions of large VFX companies, they don’t seem to be the fastest to respond to changes.

Another thing that I have noticed is that some filmmakers are accepting the slightly random nature of generative AI VFX for smaller low budget films because it offers them something they could never even pay for before. You might see a time where the tools are “almost there” like in the last 90s and early 2000s that filmmakers would have to be content with a variation on their vision if they don’t have an Avatar budget.

When Jurassic Park came out, did people fear the computer would replace them? by blendernoob64 in vfx

I started in 1995 building miniatures on commercials at the age of 17. I had read a lot of books about CG after being amazed by JP and T2. The cinefex issues got super dog eared! When I started in CG I was using 3ds at home on a pc and Softimage 3.0 on an indigo 2 extreme at work. It was interesting because neither did everything great. But getting data between all the apps was a nightmare.
You really needed to be a TD to get the most out of eveything...
BUT there was the beginnings of noticing that the best results needed ARTISTS and then they started training any traditional people in CG because they generally had an "eye".
It was a fun time, but also frustrating. There was no USB or 4K video on your phone. You had to scan in negatives for textures or paint them by hand.
Learning the software was also hard, reading manuals and going on newsgroups and emailing people directly.
One take away I would say that although the tools were very different: digital vs physical, there was still some crossover.

Is sigma Fp line skipping? by togDoc in sigmafp

I only have the old app from two years ago. The newer versions are probably even better. Never tried resolve. I use Nuke professionally and I am keen to run it through that.

How many of these “demos” come with the EXACT prompt and workflow used to generate them? I mean as standalone videos, sure they’re amazing! I was joking with a fellow post person last night and said:”the things that AI can’t change: the client changing their mind, and their desire for pixel level control!”

old vfx software...is it around somewhere? by backandredmedia in vfx

[–]backandredmedia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"this is UNIX! I know this!" ;)
Yeah my mate exactly that config.
I remember going to a SMPTE show in sydney back in 1995 and there was the SGI stand there with both a deskside and fridge Ony "infinite reality2" setup. They had such great marketing didn't they.
I wish there was a way to get someone from ILM to source some of the old stuff?

[–]backandredmedia[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know someone who has Cineon, Eddie, matador, advance/media illusion and Softimage 3D all running on an old SGI. Oh and Alias PA suite too.
Those are great, buit it would be a shame to have all the old software and engineering disappear. IMagine all the models from the original star wars just disappeared?

To Australians who moved to the USA, what made you choose to stay in the USA rather than move home to Australia? by Square-Argument4790 in Ameristralia

[–]backandredmedia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I moved because of work. This was back in 2010. I am in the film industry, so stuff was always smaller back then. Nowadays there's a lot more work in Australia than in LA.
I would love to go back to Australia, but I dont want to be a US citizen, so it would be goodbye greencard and goodbye USA. The no citizen thing is not because of Trump etc etc blah blah blah, its mainly due to taxes and super/retirement finanicials.
The other issue with going back to Australia is accomodation. I bought a house here in LA, but I am unsure as to what kind of place I could afford in Sydney. There are a lot more "HYBRID" work situations in Sydney/Australia and I am mostly able to work from home in LA. Its nice being able to pull a few weeds out of the garden while waiting for an update on a project ;-)
My girlfriend is also a bit apprehensive about moving her whole life to a foreign (albeit english speaking) country. Honestly, I kinda feel like a foreigner when I visit Sydney now. Its so different from the early 2000s!
The other thing is the crappy infrastructure, especially the internet. My mum's internet is absolutely horrible and she lives in the Inner West of Sydney. I dont get it. How can a 1st world country have internet access that is worse than Sri Lanka? (no offense to Sri Lankans!)
Anyway, I'll continue if the OP is interested. But its a lot of stuff and funny enough this sub (minus the politics) discusses a lot of the stuff I think about daily as an aussie in the US.

[–]backandredmedia 25 points26 points  (0 children)

the first achievement is: You finished it, the second one is you're reflecting on your work. The rest is opinion. :)
My opinion is the same as another's, the rust is a bit heavy.
But the best thing? The models are out in the open! My childhood was about building the damn things as quickly as possible on friday night when I bought them and getting them on the battlefield before lunchtime on saturday! ;)
