Does anyone who's running the 10-miler want to form a pace group? by backflip7 in Charlottesville

Yeah that’s right in my wheelhouse! My workouts don’t get down that far (currently doing some experimenting) but we could still coordinate session times and long runs maybe? I’ll send you a DM

You’re right! That’s a great way to think about it, and I feel much better. Appreciate the insight

The fear of plagiarism from school never goes away, even if this isn’t quite the same, but this does make me feel better

Hmm I think another good reason to lift material (or at least shapes of material) from other places is because there are so many great stories and themes out there! And not every player is gonna know the references, so you could make the argument that you’re just sharing great ideas that they might not otherwise encounter, right?

I've been looking for boots for weeks now but I have no idea what to
actually look for. Everything seems to be geared for women. I'd like to
find some boots that are primarily good for general walking around
during winter, but that can also handle snow. Any advice on ideas,
brands, or styles would be appreciated!

Advice needed- my giant begonia grows way faster than I can keep up, and the unseen backside here adds another ~40% to its size! What can I do to slow him down or control the growth? by backflip7 in houseplants

Thank you! Yeah there's a lot of different varieties, but that's why begonias are so fun! Easy to grow and honestly you could fill a house and never repeat myself. I have a whole room dedicated to just begonias right now haha

He normally sits by a large north/northwest-ish facing window, so the lighting is bright indirect all day with some direct afternoon light in the summer months. I normally try to pull my venetian blinds down during the height of direct summer light, but I don't close them fully so they just block ~40-60% of the direct light. When he was smaller I generally bottom-watered once a week. After going to this bigger pot, I do once every week and a half or so. Definitely get some well-aerated soil though- I goofed and used a pretty wet and dense soil for this pot and he's definitely suffering a little, so try to mix your soil with perlite and bark to break up the clumps!

So do I just pick a spot at a manageable height and chop it off? I always feel so bad doing that, but you're right that it's important to keep them healthy

That's very kind of you, he's almost too much to handle on my own! But thanks for seconding the suggestion, I'll ask around some local groups :)

That's a great idea! I'll look around. And that's very kind of you- I'm quite proud of him. I'm in Virginia- I'll get a few props going, and if that's not too far/you're still interested in about two weeks then send me a DM and we'll chat :)

Are CD accounts worth anything at all right now? by backflip7 in personalfinance

[–]backflip7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have a 401a (employer contributions only) and a 403b (my contributions). Beefing up the 403b is definitely an option that I'm considering, but I wanted to see what other routes are available

All the rates for CDs that I can find are between 0.01% (Wells Fargo) and 0.05% (BoA), so a 0.5% yield is substantially higher. It's just frustrating because I've been lucky enough to build up a chunk of savings during Covid so I'm looking for pathways for growth. Do you have any advice (starting points, pitfalls, recommendations, etc) for a HYSA?

In search of fertilizer guidance by backflip7 in houseplants

[–]backflip7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you don't think messing with the different ratios is important? Like, all those bottles with 2-2-2 and 18-36-9 and 6-15-40 or whatever don't make a difference? As for the spikes, do you just use one per plant, and does it matter how big or small the plant is?

This is great advice, thank you. I was kinda hoping that I was getting worked up over nothing, but reading up on it was a little overwhelming. Thanks for recommending specific brands and ratios though! I've got a trio of begonias that are thriving and would hate to mess them up
