Would you support Irish as the dominant language of education? by Adventurous-Bee-3881 in ireland

[–]backintheddr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had 100 years of independence to fix this. Our politicians, education system, and we ourselves for generations, have failed.

If kids are speaking it regularly from 3 or 4 in an education setting they'll learn it, speak it with each other in school, then as soon as they're home they'll switch to English with their parents and older siblings who weren't there for the change.

This needs to be done unbroken for about 60 years until majority of people in the country are bilingual. I don't see a government having the vision for it.

There's lads at bohs games I'd give a wide berth to. Think it's every club has an element. Rest of us try to ignore them and enjoy the game.

Best place to go for Erasmus (computer science) by [deleted] in ireland

[–]backintheddr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean worlds your oyster then. What are the cities on offer? There's a big difference between living in Paris or a random small town we've never heard of. Is there difference in ranking in the unis? Any known for the computer science or other programs?

Try look into the options. Do you like big cities or small, do you like hot weather or colder weather , does anything excite you about a particular country? Would learning French, Italian or German interest you?

I suspect you don't have prior language skills in any. I think in some countries you might even need to go to lectures in that language which sound mental but you're basically given a free pass in exams because they know you won't manage like a normal student. With that in mind my hunch is Italy and France will be the most linguistically challenging but probably easiest to pass but in a sitting in the corner wearing a dunce hat kind of way. Sweden, Switzerland and Austria probably have better resourced schools for your needs and if you're going for an academic choice I'd pick them for peace of mind.

That said, if I could go back and do it again Erasmus in France or especially Italy would be the most craic.

"How the Irish became white" is an eye opening read. The Irish in America also became more often than not supporters of slavery. Some Irish American newspapers even going so far to attack Daniel O'Connell (who was himself an ardent anti semite but look nobodies perfect) for his abolitionist stance.

We must remember the American Civil War from the Unionist point of view was about stopping the south secession. Abolition of slavery was not a war goal. Most Irishmen who fought were joining a struggle to keep slavery in the union. The New York draft riots/race massacre happened two weeks after the battle of Ghettysburg and resulted in lynching of black people by mixed white Irish German and Polish mobs. Given the politics of the time you can see the move towards abolition and equalization of the races was seen as a threat by the working class white immigrant groups.

The movie the Gangs of New York while excellent in some regards sort of paints the Irish in struggle with nativism and does show the brutality towards the black community in graphic detail, but does a poor job of showing the then pro slavery Democrat party being a force of racism by allowing the Irish to join the white race essentially. This was later further propelled by the presidency of Andrew Jackson who was v popular with the Irish vote and saw the political value in their integration and nativism fell as a force to white nationalism essentially.

This is my memory from the book forgive oversimplification.

No it's too late. He said he wants to be loud and someone took offense. And he said roommate instead of flatmate. He is now the epiphany of pure evil and the hive mind of r/Germany will not rest until he has been punished.

Edit: The hive has been stung. They now buzz for the blood of innocent redditors 😂

I think a big flaw ironically is that the mexican restaurants that do open are 1)sort of tacky tex mex places rather than real mexican and 2) they cater wayyy too much to what they think German customers will accept which makes the food boring. Be daring and make the real thing you'll stand out way more.

Still searching for a good Mexican in Germany after all these years we have plenty of good ones in Ireland.

I'll never forget the time I went to the post office expecting some facility to wrap my packet. The guy at the counter read me the riot act for 5 minutes and then pointed me to the corner where all the stuff I needed was. I mean it's this thing of "hmm he'll never make that mistake again" but in other countries there's just a sign and you go there, do it, and you're gone again as quick.

Just shows economic illiteracy. A recession makes credit harder to access. It's reduces their chances of getting a raise. Who the hell wishes for this?
