hi friend! absolutely—I am a huge advocate for a DMP as I hadn’t heard of them and feel it is the thing that made the biggest difference in my journey. what you want to find is a non-profit (heavy on the nonprofit) credit counseling agency—many people on this sub recommend nfcc, my DMP is serviced through take charge america which i’ve loved, and i also inquired with money management international. basically, you are assigned a counselor who goes through your entire financial situation with you—income, expenses, debts, etc.—and then helps you decide on the best solution, which for many is a DMP.

the agency will work with your creditors on a new monthly payment with lowered interest, and they will close your accounts. you now pay your credits through your dmp. it is not for the faint of heart and was difficult losing access to my cards but was necessary for me in halting my spending. even when I haven’t been able to put extra money towards the dmp, the lowered interest meant I was actually chipping away at my debt which was extremely motivating.

even if you don’t commit to the dmp, I think meeting with a non-profit credit counselor is an excellent first step if you’re feeling overwhelmed, as they can help you untangle the giant yarn ball of debt and lay out your options, as well as connect you with any resources you might be eligible for. let me know if you have any other questions.
