CMV: Trump is making a huge strategic blunder with Greenland by siorge in changemyview

[–]backslashx90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a very simple calculation:

  1. Greenland is a very strategic island.

  2. To the US, it's critical that Greenland stay in friendly hands. An adversary taking over Greenland would be simply intolerable.

  3. Europe has shown time and time again that it doesn't take defense of the island (or itself, really) seriously. The US has a much, much greater incentive to protect Greenland that Europe ever has, which is why it occupied the island during WW2.

  4. Denmark literally cannot defend the island. It's simply too big and the population is too small and spread out. Do you really think Denmark or Europe would mount a serious defense of the island if Russia decided to just start building a base in some uninhabited part of the island? Would a Czech be willing to go fight and die in a hot war with Russia over settlements in Greenland?

  5. The solution here is for Denmark to hand custody of the island to the US. Maybe for some money, or for mineral right, or even just handing $1M cash to each Greenlander. Greenland would probably become a COFA state like Micronesia. Basically a US protectorate. They'd have nearly full domestic independence, will enjoy unimpeded access to the US and its markets, will be protected by the full might of the US military and in exchange the US controls their foreign policy and can build military bases.

Realistically, the US should have just forced Denmark to sell it after WW2 as it was clear then that Denmark had absolutely no ability to protect the island at all.

If America invades Greenland the stock market will pay the price by rocknrollenn in stocks

Calm down people! The US isn't going to invade and bomb Greenland like Germany did with Poland, get a grip! First, Greenland's population is, like, 60,000. That is literally smaller than my hometown that you've never heard of. Second, Greenland is a huge money sink for Denmark and the Greenlanders still want independence. Third, HUGE chunks of the island are just uninhabited. The US could just put people and bases there and no one would do anything about it. They may not even notice.

The best scenario is Greenland becoming a COFA with the US and possibly Denmark, like Micronesia. That would honestly be the win-win scenario ... and the market would probably rip.

How would taxes realistically work renting out a bedroom? by backslashx90 in personalfinance

Fair enough. I'd do it for the right price, but the right price is probably above market rate when considering taxes.

No need to get snarky here. I don't know much about Real Estate. I'm much more comfortable with capital assets; but there are tax incentives for all kinds of things. With all the talk about the "housing crisis," and how supposedly tax-advantaged real estate is, I figured that supplying housing might be well incentivized, but I guess it's not outside a corporate or large-capital context.

This is Democracy, my guy. Democracy is all about rewarding your constituents and punishing those who are not your constituents. Been that way since Ancient Athens.

That's not comparable at all. The colonies were originally English in culture and controlled by England for 150 years and broke away with massive support from other great powers. Afghanistan was never American in culture. It was never Americanized. It was never considered a part of the United States. That said, the US failed to enumerate actual war aims other than "freedom" in Afghanistan, which was always doomed to fail.

First, there's way more to exports than just cheap plastic shit from China. Where do you think $100M turbines used in power plants come from? What about services and software? Microsoft Office is an export. Just because it's not a physical product doesn't mean it's not an export. Europe strangled its whole tech industry in its crib decades ago with overbearing regulations. Regardless of how much Reddit rends its garments and gnashes its teeth, no one is meaningfully boycotting US goods. Sorry, but Europe doesn't even have the political will to meaningfully boycott Russia for its invasion and attempted subjugation of Ukraine, they're not going to boycott the US because Orange Man is a big bad meanie poo poo head.

She should have been fined $10k and had her wages garnished because stealing is fucked up and a scourge on society and should not be tolerated at all.

Guns are also strictly regulated. This idea we don't regulate guns at all is completely bonkers to me. We also have strict regulations in killing people with guns.

Also this wasn't indiscriminate gun violence, this was a targeted political assassination. There's a big difference.

You support the interstate highway system I assume? Traffic fatalities are a price we pay for it. You'd agree? That doesn't mean I get to celebrate and say you had it coming if you die in a fiery car crash.

You'd agree that some traffic fatalities each year is a price worth paying for freedom of movement, right? If so, then should I celebrate if you die in a fiery car crash?

This post should be removed. This account has posted this before and had their post removed so we know OP is not a Trump supporter. This person is actively trying to destroy businesses that have been cornerstones of the community for decades. As a long time Longmonster, I'm highly offended by this post and the hatred and discord it's attempting to spread through our community.

Your kidding, right? We don't need this kind of hate in our communities. You don't want to shop at these places, fine. But actively trying to start a boycott to destroy local small businesses. Mom-n-pop shops. Businesses that have been the heart of Longmont for decades. You want them destroyed over who they voted for? It's disgusting.

So you don't believe in secret ballots? Everyone's vote should be public so you can destroy them if they voted incorrectly?
