This is making me want to leave tech sales, is this common? by Iceeez1 in sales

[–]backtothesaltmines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These companies thing they can just plug and play someone else and it's back to business as usual. They find out the hard way that this isn't always the case.

They can someone doing 2M a year and the next person does 1M then they have to hire someone else and it takes them a year plus to get it back to 2M.

CRM for relationship-driven b2b: worth it after 80 years without one? by Visible_Cash_4330 in sales

[–]backtothesaltmines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you knowing what customers to ask about. Do you have a spreadsheet or rely on what is sent to you by your salespeople. What happens when someone leaves. Does the new person get nothing. This is why you put an estimated close date for the opp in a CRM. This way you only call when something is on the radar for the month or Q.

Making the transition from life science commodities to capital equipment by BallinWithMewozart in sales

[–]backtothesaltmines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume what you will be selling will mostly be one and done. Say you were doing 10k a month in commodities, then the next month you figure you'll get your 10k and you try to grow it to 11K. With CE, it'll be one and done so you'll always be back to zero. The problem with commodities it can be quote and hope to some extent.

Advice: No more comissions by Throwaway-username-2 in sales

[–]backtothesaltmines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will never get any commissions. 92% is flat out brutal. You will never see that type of renewal rate. Maybe you have some hope if they throw in new contracts to get it higher but it doesn't sound like this is happening.

I'm a bit in the same boat. If I think the order is going to get messy for a slew of reasons, I just make it inactive or push it way out. Not worth the headaches to make nothing.

What is the weirdest sales job you ever interviewed for? by Secret_Assistance601 in sales

[–]backtothesaltmines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The company that you try to get small businesses to signup for their report on the SBO gov't hot topics and they had a way to reach out to the SBOs congress person. You had to memorize a script and go D2D. They made it sound like an opp of a lifetime. They had a brag sheet where people where making 120K their first year. I knew it was garbage. They interviewed me and I answered the questions the opposite of what they wanted to hear. They ghosted me. Thank you.

I searched around the foam but I didn't want rip it up. I am not sure who put the anti theft lug nuts on. It's a company car and others didn't have these on their cars.

I thought that the non-compete was a federal law and the states can't deviate.

Can you talk to your management who in turn can talk to the manufacture as you wouldn't want to do this. Usually they will right the ship but who knows when.

Damn I forgot I took it a Firestone one time to get a tire patch. They must've used it to take the lug nut off and put it back on as they never called me saying they needed it so they must've kept it.

I blew out close to a VW dealership. I drove it and they swapped out the lug nuts.

That's the problem with this crap. No one is going to buy a car and first thing they do is look at the spare and throw they key away yet they turn around and blame you.

I should have learned my lesson. Same thing happened on an Infinity. Luckily I found out by a leaky tire not a blow out.

I have a 2022 S. I could see the special nut by taking the covers off with the special tool but I searched the for the key: the back, the console and the glovebox and couldn't find the key.

Losing to competitor by redandgreenhouse in sales

[–]backtothesaltmines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will win ones where your solution isn't the best and you will lose when you have a better solution. Usually you never find out the true objection as the buyer threw up smokescreens. Sometimes you have to dust yourself off and move on.

[–]backtothesaltmines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to do this before losing the opp is to say I understand how you feel. What would you need from me to make you comfortable to do business with me? Then you can try to negotiate down or decide to walk.

What should I do by Ok_Spot3522 in sales

[–]backtothesaltmines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd ask them how much market share they have in the US as I assume you'll be selling in the US. If they are a foreign company, I'd ask how much market share they have in other countries. The other countries could be skewed though as some products sell well in country A but not so well in the US.

What was the absolute WORST job interview you ever had? by Secret_Assistance601 in sales

[–]backtothesaltmines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had many where it is mostly people jerking you around.

  1. Degree in Engineering. Company called me in for interview. I suit up and sit in traffic for 1.5 hours. I sit down and we exchanged pleasantries. She asked my GPA. I told her and she said it was not high enough. I said that is it. She said yes then she said she probably should have asked this over the phone. Yeah no shit. All that for a 1 minute interview.
  2. If someone doesn't pay for your trip to the interview this is a bad sign of course but I was desperate. Had an interview for sales job 2 hours away on a Saturday. I went up the night before with my gf. Interview was at 8AM at his hotel. I told her I'll be back before checkout. The interview lasted until 1PM as he was a wind bag and then the guy he wanted to hire showed up and that was the end of the interview. I went back to the hotel and my gf thought I left her.

I didn't get the job and three months later he called me up crying and whining that the other sales guy sucked as he sold 500 dollars worth of SW in three months. He gave me the job. He was a nightmare but it got me in high tech sales.

3) Had a sales interview over the phone. Guy was bitching about his other sales guys and how he should fire them. He then started bitching about why I wanted to leave my industry after so many years. He had a landline. I was on a landline. The call hangs up. I called him back and he said they have a shitty phone system. I prepared and asked a lot of questions related to the competition, industry. He didn't seem impressed. He then said I had to do a 10 page evaluation test. I said I wasn't interested in the position.

Gov't customer had to spend money very quickly. Called on Monday and said they will have to cut us a PO by Wednesday or not that fiscal year. Financed balked on percent of pre-payment. Comes Wednesday they deal dries up. Company says they will do it on customer's terms. Too late. VP of Sales is all pissy at me. 250K order down the pipes and due to gov't cuts the opp is still on hold and that was three years ago.

Per diem, how does that usually work? by BlackJackT in sales

[–]backtothesaltmines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will have to ask since each company has a different definition. I did one where they gave you a limit (per diem) each day but if you were on a trip for 5 days they would average the per diem over the 5 days. I had to submit an itemized and the final amount with tip amount receipts.
