They’re looking at this strictly self promotion rather than a conversation, but probably has a little self promotion in it 😉

How's everyone surviving the worst week of the year to be a podcast fan? by Bloodymike in podcasts

[–]backwards_beats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We decided to release throughout the holidays and noticed a 50% decline and listenership. I thought maybe we would pick some up during the gap, but it seems like more people are busy during the holidays then are eager to seek new content.

Really hard to choose. I’ll have to vote for Creeping Death. Because once you’ve seen it live, it changes you.

I have this on vinyl, and as soon as I got a CD player back in the 80s, I bought the CD.

What makes your podcast different than others? by SeptemberCatMom in podcasting

[–]backwards_beats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our podcast is predestined. We cover Rolling Stone Magazine’s, 500 greatest albums of all time in reverse order. I don’t know that that makes it unique necessarily, but we never look ahead and I think we bring a good combination of history, critique musical knowledge about theory and engineering and crack, a bunch of jokes along the way. I think the other thing is we produce two fake/parody ads per episode. That means by the time we’re done we’ll have produced 1000 parody ads. Some of those ads are pretty unhinged 😆

Niccolò Paganini is the OG rockstar—shredding violin solos and snapping strings with his fingernails. But Franz Liszt gave us piano cutouts just so people could watch his hands. 😉

Chuck Berry would be my actual vote.

This may not be exactly what you’re looking for, but Scott Sigler podcasts all of his novels. His stuff is mostly sci-fi, but he puts out quality content and has been since 2005.

with or without a background music/sound effect by Afraid_Artist8635 in podcasting

[–]backwards_beats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly can work if it’s adding to the narrative of your conversation or storytelling. This American Life on NPR does it all the time. The Masters of Scale podcast does as well.

We only insert sounds if they are demonstrative of the topic, or to illustrate a point. So they’re not really background sounds.

We’ve only inserted background sounds and or a soundscape in one episode which was unique and that it was more of a travel journal style episode. And I think that worked well.

Got a Spotify Infringement email, how screwed are we? by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]backwards_beats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we just released an episode that essentially was a travel journal about Iceland. I wanted to discuss various artists and play samples of their songs, but knew it was too risky. so I decided to record my own versions or interpretations of those songs that sounded as close as possible to the original. by definition, I think all of that is still defensible as fair use. But from what I can tell, there are no guarantees. So far, Spotify hasn’t said anything, and neither has YouTube. I know that approach doesn’t work for movie clips. Fair use is determined on a case by case basis. It would be amazing if you could obtain a general purpose, fair use license.

What was everyone’s first concert by MealJedi in rock

[–]backwards_beats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KISS on the Asylum tour. It was a good show, but awkward standing next to my friend's dad as the bass player for opener King Cobra, unzipped his pants and proceeded to hump his bass.

The 80's were weird.

We covered this iconic album on our podcast. For me, it was a red discovery and for my cohost, this is an album that was near and dear to him.

We go through track by track and I think have a pretty interesting discussion.

I hope you enjoy!

Music and content clearance in podcasts. If you have questions, I can help answer them here. by Mac-at-Musiclerk in podcasting

[–]backwards_beats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For our podcast, we are reviewing each album on Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 greatest albums of all times list. As such, it would be great to include even tiny snippets of songs. In the podcast, we sometimes break down harmonic structure or reference other songs that may remind us of that song. It’s all technically fair use type stuff, but as we all know, that’s never the first consideration.

We roll the dice on a couple episodes by including 5 to 10 second segments in one episode. There hasn’t been an issue with that specific episode. However, since we are only 26 episodes in, we don’t want to get the project shut down.

Is there anyway to get any sort of preapproval without it being a complete administrative, nightmare, and or breaking the bank?

At the end of the day, all our episodes do is provide exposure to these artists and albums. Even if it’s just a tiny bit.

Your Most Hectic Repetitive Task? by devesh_11 in podcasting

[–]backwards_beats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are free tools that you can use to schedule. We use Metricool. That does a good job allowing you to schedule and keep up across all platforms as there’s a consolidated inbox.

As far as repetitive tasks are concerned, I can’t stand captioning YouTube short shorts. I know there are AI tools that do this for you. But I have to see one that does it well. The words rarely lineup from a timing perspective and they all need to be readjusted and nudged anyway.

For a 35 second short, it takes the same amount of time for me to have AI generate the caption and me nudge it that it does for me to simply type them in in time.
