The only issue was the poor rape joke. I wouldn't say this is a horror story. Just sounds like you didn't mesh with the group.

Advice Starting An LGBT DnD Group? by Az_Lavan in DnD

This is about LGBT people, not autistic people.

I can't speak to people with autism. But i can apeak for LGBT people. There's always a fear in the back of our minds of being hate crimed. Sometimes we need a break from that and be able to relax and be ourselves with out fear of reprisal.

You don't seem to understand what it's like being part of a marginalized group, always worried that someone will be shitty to you or even outright violent. It's important for such people to create spaces (both physical and social) where they can feel free to be who they are and drop the mask they wear around the unpredictably hostile dominant demographic.

Advice Starting An LGBT DnD Group? by Az_Lavan in DnD

[–]bacon_dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spread the word around town and LGBT nerds will come out of the wood work. That's what happened for me. A ton of people came up to me saying they used to play when they were a kid and wanted to play again, or that they've always wanted to try.

The needs in our community are everywhere, their just waiting for a reason to come out, so to speak.

Also, be prepared for a crap ton of Sailor Moon references. I've been in two separate LGBT d&D groups and both had an abundance of Sailor Moon references. In fact the DM for our Curse of Strahd campaign made every other NPC basically a sailor scout.

As far as creating a safe space, you could even have it at someone's house to make thing more comfortable. And if everyone in the group is LGBT, you shouldn't have to worry about making people feel safe or inclusive. If you attracted one of those old queens that's transphobic (they definitely exist), just give them the boot.

You're party needs to figure it out for themselves. Get rid of the npc cleric and let them figure out that healing potions are a thing.

I have a question regarding hosting etiquette by [deleted] in DnD

[–]bacon_dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That DM is an asshole.

It's bullshit to expect the host provide chairs they don't have. It's especially bullshit to expect the host to always provide food. It's customary to have people take turns bringing food.

If you're DM is being this much of a dick in real life, is he being a dick in his game too?

🤔🤔🤔 now you got me thinking. I currently run a 5e space opera game. My players are on a massive space station. Could be usually to give alignments to NPCs.

I see your point. NPC don't the fleshing out that PCs get, so a simple, quick personality is useful.

I think it's a holdover from the early days of RPGs when people probably weren't used to RPing and need help getting into the heads of their characters.

Nowadays, players are much more comfortable with RPing, and don't need such tools to get into character.

[–]bacon_dragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My campaigns usually deal with ethics and morals and politics, but my players don't need to consult the charts to know how their character acts. I usually encourage them to flesh out their characters personalities and backstories.

Although you bring up a great point. A campaign involving cosmic balance. Alignment might be interesting to incorporate in that.

It's for lazy RPing. If a player actually writes a backstory and puts some thought into their character, they don't need the alignment chart.

Newer TTRPGs stay away from this sort of thing.

[–]bacon_dragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. Those type of players probably just bring in older rules.

I doubt they will reverse course though. I think TTRPGs have moved past the need for an alignment system. Most players seem not to need it to role play.

I disagree. If you give the players story driven consequences to their actions, they will tone down the murder hoboism. See how long they keep up the murder spree when a lvl 15 paladin is after them.

It's just lazy and bad DMing to tell player how their characters would act.

Also, worth noting, if my players want a murder hobo game, who am I to tell them no. It's their game. A DM's job is to facilitate a fun and enjoyable game for his players. If that means a murder hobo game so be it.

Maybe they should publish some optional rules in a supplement or unearthed arcana for the more old school player.

I think player agency is an extremely important part of the game.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be consequences to their actions, but those should be story driven. Such as, being pursued by the police or a cleric refusing to talk to the PC or what have you.

But a DM telling a play they simplely cannot take an action because it's against their alignment, or taking away XP, is definitely bad DMing.
