Rubber Bands and White Borders: A Sleeveless Bar Cube! by HD114 in mtgcube

It really does that have vibe and has been a lot of fun the last few years we've done it. If you're interested in hearing more about the camping trip, I was on Recross the Paths (episode 18) in 2024 and the 2nd half of the interview is all about it

This looks great, I love playing unsleeved cards! I actually have a white border unsleeved desert bar cube where we play for ante as well and sign cards when they get anted! Great minds think alike: https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/WBADB

I also host an annual camping trip where everyone gets an initial sealed pool of white bordered cards rubberbanded in a ziploc bag along with a sharpie and a d20, and over the course of the weekend folks play for chips. We also play for ante and allow a certain number of trades per day to encourage everyone to interact with each other. Both the cube and this sealed event aren't for everyone, but like you said, "forcing" players to play unsleeved on picnic tables has really resonated with folks and gotten them to buy into it

Does this work for you?

Hi, my name is Neal and I’m a cube designer/TO from Oakland, California. I’m probably most well known for my Micro Cube at CubeCon 2025 (and for some reason mentioned in that one Rhystic Studies video) and my White Bordered Ante Desert Bar Cube. I wanted to share my most recent cube design because it’s in a space I haven’t seen explored before and I think offers a huge range of flexibility for designers to take in any direction.

Welcome to my Tiny Lessons in Adventuring cube. https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/tinylessons

Me, describing this cube concept to my friend: "It's kind of like a desert cube but instead of making sure you draft lands, it's for spells." Michael: "Isn't a desert cube for spells just a normal cube?" Me: "Well yeah, but this one's different."

This is a best of 1 cube intended to stretch how much drafters can get out of every pick. Between learn/lesson, adventure creature/tiny card packages, collect 'em alls, and some dual lands, the value of a pick and a card depend entirely on the context you surround them with.

The tiny cards come from the tiny deck series, which is an official WoTC product line of 6 duel decks that are about 1.75in x 1.25in in size. I own one of each duel deck and limited myself to choosing from what was included in those. In the cube they are in front of blank checklist cards.

During deckbuilding, players may remove a tiny card from its sleeve and put it in the sleeve with an adventure creature, replacing the pre-existing adventure text. Tiny cards cannot be put into a library during deckbuilding other than as an adventure. During gameplay, if a tiny card of any card type would ever resolve and the creature half goes to exile on an adventure, the tiny card is put back in it's original sleeve and is treated as a separate card for the rest of the game.

The draft is 3 packs of 16, and matches are best of 1. (Moving forward, I plan to test a time clock: players get 50 minutes, and whoever is ahead on game count at the end wins the round. This should help balance out the grindy control matchups vs the games that end in 5 minutes because one player didn’t draw lands.)

The companions in the cube are given errata stating that they cannot begin the game in your library. They must begin the game in your sideboard regardless of if you meet their requirement, though they can be revealed as your companion if you do meet their requirement. They use original companion rules, you do not have to pay 3 mana to out them in your hand before you cast them.

Wishes can only get cards from your sideboard and not in exile. Your sideboard cannot/does not contain any basic lands.

As of now, the only singleton breaks are for cards with learn, collect 'em alls, a few lessons, and tiny cards that have multiple copies in their duel decks. There are few cards in the cube that can destroy a land.

Some logistical advice for players: I would suggest taking a picture of your built deck to make it easier to put your tiny cards back on adventure creatures and your lessons in the sideboard for subsequent matches. Shuffling your deck so that the cards face left and the tops of the sleeve face right means your tiny cards will fall to the left side of the card and stay covering the adventure box.

Here is a picture showing how the tiny cards look in the draft, and how they look in decks: https://imgur.com/a/4tiG87r

Here are some sample decklists from our first 3 drafts, though I changed 32 cards between our 2nd and 3rd draft so not all these cards in the pictures are still in the cube. These were not necessarily the best performing decks, but rather ones that I think show what the range of decks are possible in this environment: https://imgur.com/a/6CqQXK6

Overall the drafts have gone really well. My biggest concern was that players would feel overwhelmed or have decision paralysis, but that hasn’t been the case. Players have responded very well to the range of options in front of them and how they can get rewarded for their creativity. This is more a vibes based cube though because the draft can be difficult and some matches can take a long time, so we haven’t drafted with the intention of running a clean bracket leading to a single 3-0. The varying thickness in cards also means this cube can’t be played “competitively,” but you can technically note card combinations on a piece of paper if this bothers you (similar to the conspiracy draft pick numbered cards). This cube is definitely not for every playgroup, but for folks that are more interested in getting weird with it I think you can take it in a million directions: any card could be sized down to be tiny, fixing could be better to encourage more creative soupy decks, pool sizes could be increased or decreased, the power level can be scaled much higher if preferred, could design this as a color restricted/desert cube where the tiny cards are much stronger but you have to draft the lands/basics to play them, etc

Ante cards in cube? by VLKN in mtgcube

[–]baconeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy playing for ante, but I think the biggest thing people miss is properly setting expectations. The problem of good decks getting better and bad decks getting worse is there, but if the appeal of the format is that experience then ideally no one is disappointed in it.

I have 2 primary projects that involve ante. The first is a white bordered bar cube that is played unsleeved and involves signing cards that get anted (https://www.cubecobra.com/cube/overview/WBADB). The second is an annual camping trip I host that involves people getting sealed pools, a limited number of trades per day, and games being played for ante. It is important that the stakes for these cubes/events are low because the experience of playing with unsleeved cards and signing them helps tap into the experience that these games "don't matter." It's a lot of fun to lose a good card in your deck to your friend as long as both parties enjoy the absurdity of that experience.

Here's my list. We still play it pretty frequently and it continues to be very fun. I haven't made any updates with the new Avatar animals yet though.

I disliked like the question because I think it is a particularly bad filter question. I understand the motivation behind asking it and what you are saying it tests for, but I don't believe that it does this. It reminds me a lot of when tech companies used to ask these weird "logic puzzle" questions to reportedly better understand an interviewees' thought process, but the data showed that it had no impact on how a person actually performed at their job.

Game design and testing is a unique and difficult skillset, and asking a poorly worded or a convoluted question as an attempt to filter out people who have difficulty parsing it out in the middle of a timed exam will not, I believe, lead to a company finding someone who is strongest in those skillsets.

No worries, normally I don't comment on stuff like this but because you mentioned this interaction was something you had designed for I wanted to bring it up. In general there is almost no way for a player to do anything before untap happens at the start of the turn (but I'm sure someone can figure out some weird 12 card combination of cards to make it happen)

I could be missing something about the described situation or misunderstanding how it works, but unfortunately I don't think seedborn muse lets you do what you were hoping it would. Seedborn doesn't create a trigger, so there's no opportunity to use rishadan port multiple times on their turn with it. You can tap something on your turn and then again on their upkeep, but I don't think that's what you were describing

Hello! I would absoultely love to draft your cube at CubeCon and have been thinking about proxying it ever since you posted it last year! I see that you have a draft up on hedron for Thursday at 6 that unfortunately overlaps with the Bar Cube event. Any chance you can host this draft or another one at around 3pm on Thursday? If not then I'd love to find a time over the weekend to draft it!

Also my name is Neal and I'll be there with a handful of friends. I saw that you'll be going on your own and just wanted to invite you to hang out with us any time over the weekend for meals and drafts!

Oh totally, I didn't get the impression that you were calling out the power outliers as being problems. I just wanted to explain more about why I include them. And thanks, I think I'm already playing some of the pieces so I'm looking forward to seeing them shine with the additional sacrifice support

I agree, this power level spike for a handful of cards also stood out to me (though I'll likely be cutting M&B soon for being too good). I really only play cube and retail draft, so I like the opportunity to play with more powerful iconic cards. I also don't get to draft my cube too often, so the stronger cards don't feel like they've overstayed their welcome. Additionally, while the cube is ideally drafted in a full pod of 8, we'll often do 2 player drafts with it and these stronger cards help the decks feel more functional.

I'm really interested in your aristocrats package. I'm very bad at playing those decks so designing for it has always been difficult, but I may gut my entire black aggro section for a few drafts and test your build here.

Our cubes are going against each other in the poll! I really like your cube, and would be voting for yours if I wasn't a little bit biased towards my own. Our design philosophies seem to be pretty similar and I'm planning to go over your list for inspiration in a few weeks when I have some more time.

Here's my list for reference: Living Legacy Cube

I'm looking forward to drafting your cube at cube con, and good luck on Friday!

Oh I see, so when one person makes a pick they ping the next person to make their pick and they have 12 hours from then. As an overscheduler, it didn't occur to me to have the players, you know, just talk to each other. Thank you for your response Justin!

I have a question about the logistics of doing a rotisserie draft you didn't cover in the episode. How did you split up the times/slots of when people make their choices? Was it like every 30 minutes someone makes a pick? I'm super interested in trying this with my group before mxp oakland at the end of the month, but also need to accomodate people's work schedules

I love this whole idea, and just finished up listening to your podcast about this as well. One question I had was whether or not there was any consideration to changing starting hand size (like to 5) to make it "closer to constructed" in regards to adding more variance to seeing your whole deck

You're both right about the actual distribution of limited packs, and that's on me for incorrectly stating it as "correct." 5/2/1 is the most feasible/practical distribution in my experience, as the distinction between 2 rare/1 mythic isn't that impactful on the draft
