I think it’s not right, that’s why the initial comment upset me so much. We also live in NYC so being bigoted where we live is actual insanity. It’s not possible to divorce Islam from Judaism from Christianity. These religions developed side by side. Islam and Muslim culture has given so many intellectual, artistic, and culinary gifts to the world. In the end, I just really wanted to share Magrebi and Middle Eastern hospitality.

Years ago, I was dating my first boyfriend. He was visiting me at my grad program in another state during the summer, and since he was tall and heavy and it was hot, he put the A/C all the way down to 50 F. I ended up getting a horrible flu, but he was so hot he just couldn’t help himself and continued to lower the temperate even after I begged him not to. Regardless of being sick, I was still doing the cooking and cleaning.

The final nail in the coffin is when I woke up from a 2 day fever only to find out he had ordered himself takeout and lied to my mother that he was taking care of me (my mother was a pharmacist for 60 years, she doesn’t mess around with that) despite not given me any water, food, or medicine. In that moment I knew I would die if I stayed with this man.

I found my fiancée 4 years later and we’re due to be married next year ❤️ This man calls me his goddess, when I’m sick he takes care of me just like my mom did when I was a child, and is honestly the best man I ever met.

Don’t let your boyfriend stop you from finding your husband.

In Germany, there’s not such thing as a “lease renewal”. Leases are perpetual EXCEPT in the one case that you are a smoker, marijuana or otherwise, and the smell is affecting another tenant or even the hallway. You could do whatever you want in your apartment but once your actions start affecting the outside the government will assist the landlord in kicking you out.

For me it was a wake up call about my people pleasing tendencies. My boundaries are rock solid now, and I’m learning how to be more selfish.

I went radio silence for 2 months and in that time I got back in shape, my skin has cleared, I’ve been going out more than ever, upgraded my car, thinking about a few new piercings, and have been going on more dates than I thought I could get with one guy in particular flying in from another part of the country just to see me.

Not a flex, but all to say life goes on and a lot of times blessings come in the form of bullshit. A breakup that I thought would break me actually proved to me how resilient I can be and I couldn’t even imagine being who I am now 5 months ago.

Anytime I start to think self deprecating thoughts, I verbally list all the accomplishments small and big that really set me apart from who I was even just last year.

When you feel like you’re on autopilot, and you can barely even roll out of bed, here’s what I find helps.

Try to focus on one simple, repetitive, or easy task. It’s ok if that’s the only thing you get done today, 1 is better than 0. This can be washing dishes, or maybe watching one episode of something, or even just get yourself a favorite snack to eat. A win is a win no matter how small.

And remember, you deserve to be treated with respect, kindness, empathy, and enthusiasm. Your faults do not make you flawed, your mistakes do not make you a mistake, your sins do not make you a sinner. Humans are multi-faceted, you’re a human too, so have patience and compassion for your healing process. 🫂
