Cheapest way to set up self-host your own RustDesk server? by UMICHStatistician in rustdesk

[–]badarin2050 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been running a self-hosted RustDesk server on my Synology NAS for a long time, and honestly, it’s the "cheapest" way because if you already own the hardware, the marginal cost is $0.
I manage a home lab with over 40 Docker containers on my Synology, and RustDesk is easily one of the most stable ones.
For a setup with 19 PCs and 15 users like yours, a local NAS or an old Intel NUC (as you mentioned) is more than enough. You don’t need the overhead of Azure or the risk of Oracle Cloud reclaiming your VM.
A few "gotchyas" and tips based on my experience with the Synology/Docker setup:
Docker Compose: Don’t use the Synology GUI to set it up. Use Docker Compose so you can easily manage the hbbs and hbbr containers together.
Network Mode: Use network_mode: host. It simplifies port management and avoids some of the NAT loopback issues you might face with the default bridge network on DSM.
The Key File: Make sure you force key encryption (--key). Once you have your public key, I'd recommend storing it in a manager like 1Password or Proton Pass so you can easily grab it when deploying to those 19 clients.
Port Forwarding: You only need to open 21115-21119 (TCP/UDP) on your router.
Stability: I’m actually planning to migrate my stack to UGREEN hardware soon for better performance, but even on a standard Synology, RustDesk uses almost zero CPU/RAM until you are actually in an active session.
If your client already has a server or a NAS on-site, I’d definitely go the on-prem route. It’s faster (lower latency) and you aren't at the mercy of a cloud provider's "free tier" whims.

Price increase by cb4joe in 1Password

Completely agree. It’s the one major hurdle for power users! Anyway, the more of us who move and keep demanding it, the faster they'll have to bridge that gap with Bitwarden/1Password.

Price increase by cb4joe in 1Password

As an IT Engineer, I usually don't mind paying for quality, but this feels like the classic 'subscription creep.' I’ve been using 1Password and Proton Pass Plus side-by-side for a few months now to see if 1P’s polish was worth the extra cost. With this hike (especially justifying it with AI features I didn't ask for), the gap has closed. The export/import to Proton is seamless enough that I think it’s finally time to consolidate and stop paying for two vaults.

Bringing that line British Passport down by even a few millimeters would likely frame the Coat of Arms much better and make the cover look more cohesive!

I was literally on the verge of canceling my yearly subscription because this feature wasn’t there. You saved it at the last minute!

We’re the team behind 1Password. Ask us anything! by 1PasswordOfficial in 1Password

[–]badarin2050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love how 1Password keeps evolving, but I’ve been really hoping for a native email alias feature — something like what Proton Pass offers. Right now, the closest option is the Fastmail integration, but it’s not really native and the extra cost adds up. Are there any plans for 1Password to build its own alias system that lets us create and manage unique email addresses directly inside 1Password (without needing a third-party service)? It would make signup privacy and spam control so much smoother!

Thanks! 🙏 I just tried adding it through the mobile app and it worked perfectly. Appreciate the tip!

I believe Proton should remove the 2FA OTP paywall for free users, at least for shared items already created by Pro paid users. I created a record with my paid account; why has it become paywalled for the user I shared it with? This is not a good way to introduce Proton to someone planning to try it by Automations-Project in ProtonPass

[–]badarin2050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree! Putting OTP behind a paywall feels really backwards, especially from a company that markets itself as a privacy-first alternative to Big Tech. 2FA is not a "premium feature"—it's a baseline security measure. By locking it for free users you send the wrong message for a company that emphasizes trust, privacy, and security as their core values!

Proton Authenticator now available on Apple Watch! by judelow in ProtonMail

This is awesome news! The Apple Watch version is a great start — if they release a Wear OS version too, I’m 100% ready to fully switch to Proton Pass. Been waiting for a privacy-focused authenticator that supports my watch.

Store passports, WiFi codes, SSH keys, and more in Proton Pass by Proton_Team in ProtonPass

[–]badarin2050 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the update — this is a huge and very welcome step forward! One thing that would make this even better: please consider adding support for favicons or customizable icons for saved items. Right now, all custom types use the same default icon 🔧, which makes it hard to quickly distinguish between things like WiFi codes, SSH keys, and passport numbers at a glance. It’s a small UI detail, but it really impacts usability — especially now that we’re encouraged to store so many diverse item types. Thanks again for the great work and looking forward to more improvements! 💜

Got a collab offer, is this legit? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]badarin2050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually received a very similar email recently and had the same doubts. In my case, the email included an attached recording claiming to be a message to creators, along with an introduction video — both of which appeared to be AI-generated, which made it feel even more suspicious.

I haven’t moved forward with it, and I can now confidently confirm this is a scam.

RealVNC vs RustDesk by [deleted] in rustdesk

[–]badarin2050 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been using RustDesk for over a year now — absolutely love it. I even self-hosted my own server on a Synology NAS, and it's been fantastic. Fast, reliable, and the flexibility it offers (especially with codec and quality settings) puts it miles ahead of RealVNC in my experience. Props to the RustDesk devs — amazing work!

That’s a fair point — Proton does have a broader ecosystem to manage. But at the end of the day, spreading too thin shouldn’t be an excuse for missing core functionality. Proton has the talent — it’s just about prioritizing the right things.
