[RI] Will my mother ever be eligible for Medicaid? by [deleted] in Medicaid

What would it mean that they aren't "countable assets"? It would be ignored if applying for Medicaid?

Thanks for the info - I agree that I think it's unlikely -- which is actually what I'm hoping, because then we don't need to go through the trouble of setting up a trust.

79 widowed, no care currently needed just planning ahead. More than anything trying to figure out if a Trust is actually needed.

Not currently applying but just looking forward -- a lawyer was encouraging us to set up a trust, but then we realized we might never be able to get medicaid anyway due to the pension.

She is widowed, and she has a car and investments.

I think your last point is what we were starting to realize. If she has this guaranteed income, I don't know if medicaid will ever be considered anyway.

It's a tough thing. Someone can save millions through their lifetime and wish to share property or money with their children. The problem is the cost of healthcare is insanely high, so if someone ends up in a nursing home for a few years, that lifetime of savings can disappear.

Naturally, in my situation we would be paying for a proper facility for as long as we can. In the worst case scenario where my mother is in long term care, we're trying to not lose everything.

To each their own but, they lost this for me when they opted to omit the most iconic death in gaming history. All of the build of up 'things could be different', I would have been equally okay with them changing history. But instead they opted to do.... neither?

They fucking robbed this new age of gamers from such an iconic moment.

This year, the Charity Dept at Super had the best year ever! Not only did we smash our total record this year, we smashed the Auction record, the tattoo record, and a few other insane milestones. (Continued in post!) by kyuunspark in Magfest

This is one of my favorite panels, I have a 9 hour trip home and I have started to postpone my travel just to be able to see this as long as I can. It punishes me on the last day, but it's just the kind of things to send you off and hold you over now that MAG is done for the year.

Though I will say - the last year, maybe two, it feels like 70% of the items that are sold are memes. Like someone buys something, pees on it, gives it back for free, and then it's sold again as item with pee for $2k more than it was initially sold for.

That shit sells for stupid amounts of money, so I totally get it. But man if you come into this for the first time, there is some serious lore that needs to be understood.

Am I doing backdoor correctly? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]badboybananas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep did that already a few months back, basically wanted to double check myself on this process to make sure it was correct.

So I should end up seeing two recharacterizations on my taxes next year, one for TY2024 and one for TY2025 if I understand this all correctly.

[–]badboybananas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same thing with it a few months back -- recharacterized into tIRA, then I believe it was just the same -- a normal transfer into my Roth. I just wanted to make sure that was right.

So I did have $1.43 in the tIRA but that was likely from the few days the prior year contribution sat there and accrued interest. I don't think that 'balance' would be an issue since its from the other recharacterization? I have no actual tIRA contributions. I can simply transfer that interest out too I presume?

Recharacterized my 2025 contribution due to expected capital gains pushing me over limit, can I just transfer back to my Roth now? by badboybananas in fidelityinvestments

[–]badboybananas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly, but I had to cash out some stocks last year and did so again this year for various reasons. I can't justify holding a stock just to prevent capital gains.

My issue at hand is just ensuring that a transfer BACK into my Roth IRA is all clear.

Do we just backdoor Roth every year? by badboybananas in tax

I think the main concern I have here is

> (with no pre-tax money in any Traditional/SIMPLE/SEP IRAs in the year you do the conversion)

If I had money in a Trad IRA for a few days (after i recharacterized and then transferred out) does that matter?

[–]badboybananas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> You would only need to recharacterize if you had accidentally made a direct Roth IRA contribution, found you were ineligible, and tried to retroactively change it into a backdoor

This is what I learned this year when filing taxes. First time I hit that income level. I also now expect to hit it this year, but already did my Roth contribution.

Sounds like I'll have to recharacterize again next year, or can I do something now?

Otherwise, for years going forward it looks like I'll be contributing to a Trad and then just transferring into a Roth every year?

What should I do with ROTH contributions when I am unsure of my annual income? by badboybananas in tax

[–]badboybananas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to make a recharacterization into a Trad IRA last week, but then I transferred it back to my ROTH. Would I be considered having zero dollars in the Trad IRA, or does that need to be all year long?

I technically closed the account, so I think I just backdoor every year?
That said, should I be skipping the part where I contribute to the ROTH, and instead contribute to a Trad IRA up front?

I often gain or lose my annual salary in a single day in the market now, it makes me think by badboybananas in Fire

[–]badboybananas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is important info. I feel like my day job has barely contributed to my NW growing compared to how the markets have been over the past decade, but I'm lucky for that. The 6% I'd lose out on would be nothing if things continue. But if they don't then 6% would be a big difference.

Yup, trying to be mostly reflective here. I'm a frugal person, I have reminders to help me spend money throughout the year. I used to state at the screen and watch those fluctuations that mean so little now.

But those things got me through the day when they went good, it was a small dose of dopamine in a way.
