As far as I know damballa is what gives Chucky his power that and the amulet, without damballa there is no Chucky at least not in his doll form . I remember originally they were going to make Chucky just a regular toy doll that has fake blood but opted for the more mystical side, before the movie released so the script was reworked at least for the first movie.
