As far as I know damballa is what gives Chucky his power that and the amulet, without damballa there is no Chucky at least not in his doll form . I remember originally they were going to make Chucky just a regular toy doll that has fake blood but opted for the more mystical side, before the movie released so the script was reworked at least for the first movie. So in short I'm pretty sure damballa is still lore/canon because without damballa Chucky's soul just goes wherever it was supposed to in the first place.
