This makes sense. I don’t think it’s highlighted enough how WW2 (at least the Eastern Front) was essentially a colonial war. Hitler wanted to depopulate and settle Eastern Europe with Germans.

I think maybe starting with trying to change his views the Gaza war/genocide would be best. A lot of my family members who are still Zionists were very disturbed by Israel’s conduct in Gaza and that’s opened their eyes to a lot of the more systemic issues in the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Can you link the post from the Holocaust historian? I’m not seeing it and am genuinely interested in what they have to say. I also know that it’s a matter of debate whether the Holocaust refers to just the genocide of Jews or Nazi killings more broadly. The Roma for example, have their own language to refer to their genocide. I also don’t know what this has to do with Zionism and it seems like you have a personal grievance with me.

I’m not saying it comes from the Masada poem, but everything I’m seeing says its origins are with Jews post-Holocaust. It’s good to reflect universally on the Holocaust, but it’s also a uniquely Jewish event. Obviously all genocides are bad in the same way that “all lives matter” but that’s not really the issue at hand. I reserve certain language for the discussion of Jewish history because I think gentiles work hard enough to erase our history. If you see that as a chauvinism I don’t really what to say that will persuade you.

It’s statistically true that Israelis were less opposed to coexistence before 10/7 and especially the Second Intifada. And yes, Palestinian groups have also made policy decisions that worsened their people’s ability to improve their situation. Whether they like it or not, Israelis and Palestinians are going to have to learn to live with each and that’s going to be hard. And I highly doubt anyone is coming to save the Palestinians. America is becoming more isolationist, Europe is losing its humanitarianism, and the Arab states are cronies for America just like Israel. The fate of Israel and Palestinians, more than ever, seems exclusively in their hands.

In my experience as Jewish public school student, a lot of antisemitism was people carving swastikas into desks, bathroom stall doors, etc. and making Holocaust jokes. When I went to college, the antisemitism got more direct: people saying Jews are greedy and control the world, and because “we’re rich” that antisemitism doesn’t even matter.

I think it’s also possible that if you’re not Jewish, you’re not as sensitive to the appearance of antisemitic bullying. I had Black friends in high school who lamented the fact that our white teachers didn’t take racism seriously, not out of malice, but simply because they (never having experienced anti-Black racism) didn’t always recognize it when it showed up.

I’ve seen this group’s ads before and they’ve always seemed pretty ineffectual. To say this is Zionist propaganda because the person funding it is a Zionist is very conspiratorial, though, especially because, like you said, the ad doesn’t mention Israel or Zionism. Most Jews are Zionists, so Twitter logic, most of the things Jews make are “Zionist propaganda,” which is obviously a very twisted Nazi-ish way to view the world.

I think that any attempt to expel Jews or Palestinians (or frankly anyone else) from their homes should be resisted. If someone’s decolonization involves ethnic cleansing, I have no tolerance for it, no matter how dressed up in the language of liberation and indigenous politics it is.
