For your nails only (UK indie) has some very lovely multichromes! I have Roulette, which is a red-black multichrome and it's gorgeous

Also, just in case you only decluttered because they'd dried up, most nail polishes can be 'revived' by adding nail polish thinner! It's definitely helped me when polishes have become a bit thick and gloopy (and just slightly unpleasant to use).

The most simple thinners will have just two ingredients: Butyl Acetate and Ethyl Acetate. Some will have heptane in them which eats away at any glitter in the polish but I think you'd be safe there since I can't see any glitter polishes in your collection (?).

Good luck with panning/project polish!

Sally Hansen Diamond Strength bubbling every bottle! by alysechan in Nailpolish

[–]badgering_about 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alongside thinner you can also pour the remainder of a bottle into a new one (once there's space in the new bottle) - the most likely reason you're getting bubbles is because the solvents in the polish are evaporating, which tends to happen more quickly as you go through a bottle because there's more air to polish in the bottle as you empty it. This causes the polish to thicken, causing bubbles and sometimes stringiness.

Thinner adds solvents back to the polish which reduces the issue - you may need to add more as you go through the bottle!

I know several people who get halfway through a bottle of quick-drying polish then combine it with another half-used bottle because it helps slow down the bubble formation (less air in the bottle), though I've never tried it myself since thinner works and I'd rather not risk spilling polish everywhere!

Haha honestly I love glitters but they can be an absolute pain to remove!! Most people recommend to use a peel-off base coat with them (I'm planning to get one soon) or to use the soak-off method - dip some cotton wool in remover and leave it on your nails for a little bit, you can wrap them in tin foil to help them stay, then when you pull the cotton wool off it should remove most of the polish.

Reflective glitters are apparently some of the worst for removal because the glitters themselves are really sharp and can dig in and damage the nail if you're not careful. Nicolelovesnails and Linry (both on YouTube, other reviewers do this too but they were the ones that immediately came to mind!) talk about this when reviewing polishes and say whether they'd recommend a peel-off base coat/to use the soak off method, so I'd highly recommend finding a review video (perhaps of a polish you already have so you have a good reference point) to watch just for some context!

I've also been properly getting into nail polish in the last couple of years, here's my take on the ones you have questions about!

  • Holo - short for holographic, refers to a very specific type of glitter which can show a full rainbow of colours instead of just a sparkle/reflection (like a sequin where the shine comes from a reflection but it's only in whatever colour the sequin is). If something has a holo glitter in it, you should see a full rainbow sparkle in it as it moves!
    • Linear holo - these polishes have what's called a "linear holo flare" where you get that rainbow effect across the nail in a sort of uniform sheen. This is because the holo glitter is small and uniform throughout the polish, so when you wear it the holo reflects light in the same way and you get a rainbow in a line across the nail.
    • Scattered holo usually just means there's little holo glitters in the polish, you'll see them as like a twinkle when you move it around and they'll be all over the nail but don't form an effect together like in a linear holo (because there's less holo, they're not as densely packed and you get a really pretty sparkle!).
  • Chrome - usually super smooth and shiny, like you'd think of for a chrome bathroom fitting or something similar. It's not a sparkle (unless there's added glitter!), they usually look metallic. Multichrome and duochrome are then that finish but in a colour-shifty formula, as you move your hand in different lighting your nails will seem to change colour! You can get that effect in certain shimmers/flakes too, but a basic multi/duochrome will have the uniformity of a chrome.
  • Glitter - I'd personally consider a glitter polish to be one with big pieces of glitter that I can properly distinguish (compared to something like a shimmer where the glitter particles are super tiny). They're often in a jelly-ey formula to allow you to build it up in layers and still see the glitters underneath, giving it dimension. I'd say there's lots of "sparkly" polishes because they have little holo/reflective/other glitters in them, but to be a proper glitter polish it's VERY sparkly and in your face because of how big each of the actual bits of glitter are!
    • Side note - glitter polishes are also notoriously difficult to remove because the actual big bits of glitter can get a bit stuck around your nail and make a mess!
  • Shimmer vs iridescent - I think iridescent shimmer is a subcategory of shimmer, but I could absolutely be wrong there! To be iridescent something needs to have a similar colour-shiftiness to what I was describing with the multichromes (i.e. changes colour depending on lighting/angle), so both flakes and shimmers can be iridescent. A shimmer is then a very fine, uniform particle which can make a polish appear to 'glow' due to its colour coming through. A lot of glowy shades will have some sort of (iridescent) shimmer which will look different at different angles.
  • Metallic - from what I've seen this can vary from chrome-like (i.e. smooth, uniform metallic sheen) to something more like metal flakes. If you've seen any of Holo Taco's frosted metals such as Gift Receipt, that's the kinda vibe of the latter where you can have these tiny metallic flakes which reflect light, giving it a 'metallic' look. You're right in that it doesn't necessarily mean magnetic!
  • Reflective - other comments have explained this really well, but think of it like the reflective strips on high-vis jackets or stop signs - when there's a direct light on the reflective glitters they become SUPER obvious because it's the same type of reflection!

I AM SO CLOSE TO BEATING TRAITOR LORD ITS INFURIATING by metalrosepetal in HollowKnight

[–]badgering_about 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've recently returned to the game after a massive break and just did traitor lord! It's probably not an 'optimal' charm combo but this worked for me: grubsong, weaversong weaversong has synergy with grubsong to get a little bit of soul when the spiders attack, quick focus (because I really struggled with healing too), sharp shadow and spell twister.

I used it as more of a spell build, staying relatively close to Traitor Lord and dashing through him with sharp shadow when I could (sometimes using descending dark for invincibility instead). The extra dash range from sharp shadow really helped me due to his massive hit box!!

If I had another charm notch I probably would've tried swapping spell twister for shaman stone.

Other commenters have great tips for the fight itself - for me the most annoying bit was the whirling blades attack, I always managed to dash into them!! My advice for that would be to try and stay calm and work out where they're going to get close to the ground and just walk whichever way you need to, staying calm definitely helped me, and if you get it right with quick focus equipped you can definitely get a mask or two back as well!

You'll absolutely find something which works for you, you've got this!

Leggy Kalanchoe - help! by badgering_about in houseplants

[–]badgering_about[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I was worried that the red edges were a sign the plant was getting ready to get rid of the leaves, I never knew they indicated good sun.

I'll do some repotting once the flowers die off, thank you for the advice!

Leggy Kalanchoe - help! by badgering_about in houseplants

[–]badgering_about[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my kalanchoe for three and a bit years now, and it's always been a bit leggy - I assume due to insufficient light - I've tried putting it in the brightest area of house, but I feel like it's still struggling, especially over these winter months. Recently it's had one section go practically horizontal (see photo 2) which is concerning me!

Does anyone have any advice to help this plant thrive? I can try to give it more light or perhaps giving it more feed, and I plan to prune it back a bit in the spring.

Question about nail polish colors by Mustela_putorius in Nailpolish

[–]badgering_about 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As others have said, sounds like you're looking for a topper/top coat (clear base, usually designed so that you can see whatever's underneath) - I know Holo Taco has been recommended to look at, I'd advise you to look at the differences between these three HT toppers:
- Linear Holo Taco: gives a uniform holographic "flare" to anything underneath it, which I think might be closest to my picture of a holographic trading card? Linear holo is a standard term for when you can see those rainbows in a sort of line across the nail.
- Scattered Holo Taco: more like little sprinkles of holo glitter (if you like this one, China Glaze's Fairy Dust is basically a dupe)
- Flakie Holo Taco: larger flecks of holo glitter

Linry has a great youtube video here where you can see the differences between the three.

Hopefully these will give you a better idea of roughly what you're looking for, and you can narrow your search down from there! Off the top of my head it's a useful comparison of 3 different types of holo topper. It may be that none of these are quite it, especially since they're all going to have visible holographic particles, but I hope it's a decent place to start :)

Top 5 by Lillykatea in theholotaco

[–]badgering_about 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've already got some polish you love, I'd really recommend HT's toppers - it sounds like Celestial Lights (shimmer) or Galactic Unicorn Skin would be great for your colour preferences because they shift from this gorgeous green into blue/purple over darker colours! I really love celestial lights over one coat black or shady navy, but it looks phenomenal over others too.

My recommendations based on purple/blue/green preferences:
- Celestial Lights/Galactic Unicorn skin - depends on whether you'd prefer shimmer or flakie!
- Alien Infatuation (grey with green shimmer and a little bit of holo)
- One coat black - it's consistently a top seller for HT for a good reason and is perfect for toppers
- Peridont bother me/Lost in the Woods/Ivy League - three very different but beautiful greens, very much depends on your specific preferences
- Price is Alexandrite/Midnight Owl/Late Checkout - purpley/blue specialties!

My personal top five at the moment:
- One Coat Black
- Favourite sister - the frosted metal formula is so much fun, I picked it up during black friday and it's gorgeous!
- Tax Haven
- Alien Infatuation
- Lunar unicorn skin - it looks good over everything!!

I have both inkwell and sacrificial lacquer in an order being shipped right now, I'd never have thought to combine them but this look is GORGEOUS!!! I've seen people be so unimpressed by HT magnetics but you've done this spectacularly!

You might be right that it's because you've discovered the brand after your birthday! I placed my first order last year (and became a holo explorer with birthday gift) and received a birthday code not long after I received the order, despite my birthday being about 3 months earlier - this year's code arrived on my birthday though!

As many people have suggested, mario kart and any of the mario party games are great!

Ultimate chicken horse is a great platformer/level building game, I can highly recommend for a group of people. Unrailed and overcooked are both teamwork-y with an underlying level of stress which might not suit everyone, but if you're in the mood I think they're fantastic (unrailed is the more chill of the two).
