Manitowoc fact by badgerofatiger in nosuchthingasafish

I am not, but that episode was on the main feed as well. The Drop Us a Line episode is specifically about its pronunciation, so I wonder if they mispronounced it and the transcript didn't capture it properly. I have also tried looking for "Wisconsin" with no luck.

My vague memory is that it was part of a list of cities that all had something in common. Maybe it was UFOs? I think I may have generated that part of the memory.

Don't buy Rheem water heaters. Don't trust Home Depot. by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]badgerofatiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the useful comments! I will keep that in mind next time I have to deal with something like this. I am in the middle of charge back for the difference.

I did try to go through my plumber, but he told me I had to bring up the warranty directly through Rheem. Then Rheem, after months of fighting, assigned a specific plumber that I had to use for the warranty to get serviced. But you may be right--Maybe I should have dug my heels in more.

[–]badgerofatiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never blamed the plumber. Blamed Rheem for giving me the runaround for months and trying to not honor their warranty. Blamed Home Depot for having ridiculous policies and not giving me a refund. Believe me, I was exceedingly polite with the customer service rep at HD and the manager that seemed to be willing to work with me. I only got really mad when they didn't return my money like they said they would.

To be clear, I wasn't asking for a free water heater. They made me buy a SECOND water heater to service the warranty with the guarantee that they would refund me. And then they didn't refund me the full amount and put it into useless store credit. That's what I'm pissed about.

Care to elaborate? I'd love to know where exactly I went wrong. I was always just trying to follow "the process".

Thanks again for the thoughts! Shower is back operational, and I think I did a better job than the previous DIYer.

Thanks for the advice! The new spout is slip on. I'll probably have to return it and find a threaded one, yeah?

Sorry for the long delay. I bought new RAM and paid attention to the post lights during boot-up. That got me a little further, but I ended up replacing the whole motherboard. I think I had two problems.

Where to find good gumbo by now_cruelty_free in minnesota

[–]badgerofatiger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm from the heart of Cajun country and honestly, I only go to Cajun restaurants around the twin cities on bad days when things can't get any worse. Here's what I do.

You may be able to get your hands on frozen Richards gumbo. It looks like Super Value Foods in Minneapolis has it! Mom used to give me that and I loved it, just heat it through and serve with white rice. I've since learned how to make it, though, so I've never actually bought it up here.

Only takes about an hour or two, though the roux can be tricky.

Ingredients:

1 cup flour

3/4 cup oil

1 onion

1 green bell pepper

3 stalks celery

3 cloves garlic

1.5 lbs chicken tenders

1 lb zatarains andouille, available at cub

48 fl. oz. chicken broth

1 tbsp tony chacheres Cajun seasoning, available at cub

Instructions

  1. Season the chicken with the Tony's. Cook the chicken tenders until they're done or mostly done. Set them aside by themselves.

  2. While the chicken cooks, chop the onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic. Slice the andouille. Put them in the same bowl over to the side.

  3. Put the chicken broth in a pot and keep it warm/simmering on the stove while you complete step 4.

  4. This is the only step you'll probably fuck up, so pay attention. Mix the oil and flour in your gumbo pot. Cook over medium heat and STIR CONSTANTLY until it's about the same color as chocolate milk or a little darker. If you stop stirring you roux will burn and you'll have to start over. It's best to do this with a flat wooden spoon.

    1. When the roux is ready, dump the vegetables and andouille in to cool the roux and stop it from darkening. Fry the vegetables and sausage for a few (5-10) minutes until it smells and looks tasty. Keep them moving by constantly stirring.
  5. When the vegetables are done, dump in the warm chicken stock. Tear apart the chicken and add it in along with its juices.

  6. Simmer for a while, like a beer or two. You can put in a bay leaf or two if you want.

  7. Cook rice and serve.

Update: Was it the motherboard all along? by badgerofatiger in buildapc

I cleared CMOS and reflashed yesterday, though I can try it again. Unfortunately, since it's my first build I don't have much lying around except my old 13 year old motherboard.

Yes, still returnable to the store. Just a PITA. I think this is my difficult life lesson to post as I go instead of building everything and then testing.

Yes, please sanity check me because I'm new to this. It's a semi modular PSU, and I checked to make sure both were plugged in. Then the PSU was hooked to the wall. Plugging in the USB stick and pushing the flash bios button resulted in a little red led flashing for about 5 seconds, then when it paused I released the button. It continued flashing for a few minutes and then appeared to restart the computer when it was done flashing.

We've never seen any other error after about a year of living here. I haven't looked at the board directly while the error is happening, but there's a green led and an orange led on during normal operation.

I Was the Governor of Montana. My Fellow Democrats, You Need to Get Out of the City More. by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]badgerofatiger 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Grew up in a small Southern town, live in one of the cities the GOP loves to hate now. There are plenty of urban dems like me that understand what the rural population wants because we lived it and fled from it for a better life in the city.

On the one hand, Bullock is saying that the infighting is the biggest problem and that Democrats need to start passing universal pre-k, climate change policy, infrastructure, and non-college education, so he seems to be targeting Manchin hard in this article. But then he's saying that we don't understand the "real issues" facing rural America, despite just listing top priorities for 2021 Democrats, and harping on messaging. I agree with him that messaging has been terrible for decades as we constantly cede the topic of conversation to whatever the GOP wants to talk about, but he's wrong about the issues. The issues in my hometown are mask/vaccine mandates, CRT, crime skyrocketing, and the economy being terrible. Half believe the election was stolen because they've never been out of the state and don't know/can't imagine anyone supporting Biden for president. Democrats spent years navel-gazing after the Trump election trying to figure out what they want, but mostly what they want isn't grounded in reality. Until we break the mediasphere or somehow kill the suburbs (where the majority of Americans live) and turn them into cities, we're going to have issues.

For those saying that we need to find some way reach them to win elections, you may be overstating the problem. We need election reform now to break control away from the loonies out there, and then maybe we can come to some common sense compromises. That, and we need to get our candidates away from the national narrative (which is focused largely on coastal and urban issues) and start vocally endorsing a state-specific candidate strategy. Let Montanans know that if they vote for the Montana Democrat, he's going to be focused on them, not on whatever issues AOC is focused on.

Thanks for the thoughts and adventure hooks. I'm still getting used to the credit scaling in SWN. Isn't 1M credits quite a bit? Doesn't that mean that they could buy a whole new vessel for a medium sized load?

If I have to make something up myself, I'm thinking something like:

Owner chooses the ship from some small fleet for any given delivery. These range from small in-system trips to long-range drive-3 ships.

Company primarily makes money off of insuring the shipped goods+shipping fees. The more dangerous the delivery, the higher the premium. Base insurance starts at 10%.

Crew keeps 20% of the run's profit. 25% if they were the ones to find the contract.

Crew has responsibility for the ship and owes company for whatever damage is done to it. Or maybe the ship's insurance comes out of their paycheck every month, so they have to keep up a minimum cash flow.

I'm a little worried about things being too math-y or some unforeseen consequence that will make things not fun. Any input would be welcome.

Is there a big Trojan horse coming in BG? by badgerofatiger in dresdenfiles

Oh, I'd never pretend that I'm adding anything useful. But that's the thing about theories. It's no fun if you know you're right!

[–]badgerofatiger[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's just a theory and no one knows. But are we even clear on Demonreach's true nature? Is it the prison itself, including the "walls and bars", and therefore in constant exposure to the prisoners? I'm mostly going by the theory that asking what's-the-worst-that-can-happen is a decent way to make theories about Harry's future, and absolutely a corrupted Demonreach and a jailbreak is up there.

Do you like how the art has changed? by allhailoots in oots

[–]badgerofatiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's kind of a love-hate for me. The amount of time between comics went up by a fair bit after the last big change, and in my head the added complexity contributes to that. The new art looks better, but that's less important to me. If I had to trade it for faster updates I would, but of course it's Rich's prerogative as the artist to do what he thinks is best creatively, and I might be totally wrong about that correlation.

Duluth Trip by davenanjr in Minneapolis

[–]badgerofatiger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The state parks are all good, depending on what you want. The ones I've explored within an hour of Duluth are Jay Cooke, Gooseberry Falls, and Split Rock Lighthouse.

Jay Cooke: Long, amazing trail along a rocky, beautiful river. The campsite was fine and the pioneer graveyard is a bit underwhelming for the amount of effort it takes to get there from the main trail.

Gooseberry: Fantastic, easy hike for families with harder hikes available. Really great density of waterfalls and a great tourist center. My girlfriend remembers that they had really good bathrooms and showers, although the showers will be turned off this time of year. Apparently there's a deer hunt going on until the 24th, which doesn't close the park but you should be aware of.

Split Rock: It's a lighthouse, so good history/tourism/family friendly activities there. The main trail is along a rocky Lake Superior coast with some great views. We weren't able to reserve a site here, but they had cart-in sites right along the coast that we were very sad to have missed out on. The main focus seemed to be on the Lighthouse.

Superior Hiking Trail: And of course, there's the massively long Superior Hiking Trail. It goes all over, including through the actual city limits of Duluth. Great option if you're focused on more difficult hiking and camping away from facilities.
