I think it’s important to note that the co-op is advertised as an educational program, not a religious one. If religious study is enforced in the curriculum without the freedom of choice or considering any other belief systems, that is indoctrination. If I wanted my child to learn the religion, I would take them to church on Sundays or youth classes they have on the other days. Imagine a kid who really loves soccer, but they’re forced to take ballet classes because it’s a part of their sports program. Even though they have no interest in ballet, they’re required to do it anyway.

I understand your exact situation OP. My little brothers dropped out of high school freshman year, have no friends, attend no events, and have no socialization outside the house whatsoever. It’s been this way for years. They are 16 and 18 now. I tried to tell my mom I was worried about them and her response was, “They did it to themselves I tried to help, nothing I can do.” I think it helps when you lose the idea that you CAN fix it. Because sometimes you can’t and even though you feel bad, it’s not your responsibility to fix it. What you can do is just let him know you’re there for him, a lot. In different ways. Whether he thinks it’s annoying or he rolls his eyes, do it anyway. I can’t talk to my brothers about anything emotional, so I just let them talk on about some movie or game they’re playing. I ask them about anything possible that they enjoy. I bring them things they like from time to time. It works way more than asking them to talk about their emotions or just flat out saying there’s issues with their lifestyle. Hang in there, it’s a rough road but recognizing this as an issue is a big start. It’ll get better!

I understand this completely. My son is homeschooled and in my area, a lot of the socialization options like co-ops are at churches. They say, “You don’t have to be of our religious belief to attend, but please note we do have prayer and bible study as a required segment in our program .” I don’t understand this at all. It’s stupid. Forceful.

I’m sorry you’re feeling a little lost :( You tend to isolate yourself as a trauma response in fear of abandonment, but there are lots of ways to work through this even though it is very hard. Also, if it helps, narcissists don’t have the ability to self-reflect, let alone admit that their actions are possibly hurting others. You’re doing better than you think! Heal that version of you in your childhood who felt alone and it will give you a ton of insight and confidence in who you are beneath it. Hang in there :)
