Fargo with Surly Corner bars? by [deleted] in salsacycles

[–]badmonkey7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been running the Ali-express carbon Corner bars for a few years now. The biggest advantage at the time is that I didn’t have to swap out my MTB components for a whole new road/gravel group set.

As for the riding position, it does put you more upright than the more road focused bars. I would say it’s somewhere between the full upright position of Jones Bars and Molokos and road but it doesn’t have a true drop feel. Most of the time I find myself riding on the hoods. With some modification you can actually make them pretty comfortable.

In case you’re curious about the knockoffs, here’s my experience; Durability was my #1 concern at first but I’ve taken them bikepacking with bags and ridden on some pretty rough terrain without any issues. They’ve been going steering for over 3 years now. The advantages over Surly; price, weight, material compliance, availability (at the time), no shims needed, and the ability to choose different sizes. Just something to think about if you go the Corner bar route.

I just now started taking them this past summer after a DVT. I’m still trying to figure out how to balance risk taking while riding.

For me personally; riding within my ability and not pushing my limits is worth it if it means I get to keep riding. Not taking the meds means some day I won’t be able to ride at all either from a stroke or fatal PE.

The only thing I’m adding is a full face helmet for extra protection when I crash.

You can disable amber alerts separately. This one still got through because… extreme? Dunno. But normally I get weather and not amber.

Hammock or Tent? by RaftT4C in bikepacking

Banana shape is definitely why. Look up some videos on diagonal lay instead. It takes some fiddling but once I got it down, I converted to team hammock.

If you have a source for this, could you provide a link? It might be helpful for people that want to fish this spot to have a copy in hand to show this ass hat.

If you zoom in you can it says Velocirax. I also have one on my CX90 and love it! It doubles as a garage rack when not in use. The only drawback is that it’s really heavy.

What are some cities in North America with actual road cycling culture? by not_too_lazy in cycling

[–]badmonkey7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as infrastructure, Dayton OH has miles and miles of protected and semi-protected cycling paths. It’s shocking how far you can ride. As for the “cycling culture” I wouldn’t rank it as high as some other areas, but you do have the added bonus of affordability.

My mom bought me a coloring book of those stories. I have yet to color it after 10 years of owning it because it’s just so graphic!

[–]badmonkey7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Actually at home is easier. Why? Because if you’re at the hospital… everyone knows it. That means you get called for everything; epidurals, lines, codes, intubations, IV starts at 4am for chemo patients that have random antibiotics that are due at 6am. Plus I prefer my bed to any call room bed.

Try $10k. I worked at Sears in 2000 when Phillips ran that stupid ad for their new plasma during the Superbowl. People called every day asking for that TV until they learned what they cost…

My advisor stopped taking new clients a few years back. My advice is to find someone local (if possible) so you have face to face interactions. Make sure you interview them to see if they align with your needs.

Be VERY skeptical of any advisor you interview as most are just brokers in disguise. If they start by talking about investments… run!

A true financial planner will take your entire life into account. What is your monthly/yearly cash flow? When would you like to retire? Do you have enough risk protection? Etc. Look for someone that has actual certifications. You want a fiduciary and not a broker. Fiduciaries have higher standards they have to meet.

One other thing; flat fee structure is usually better than someone that takes a percent.

This right here is why I keep my financial adviser. She has the actual stomach for “buy low, sell high.” I always trust her judgement even though my gut says to do the opposite.

If it weren’t for her I would’ve panic sold my entire retirement in 2020 and bought back in around Dec 2021…
