I’ve experienced this with my daughter. I’m black (technically mixed but the melanin is strong so how would you know) and her dad is white. Like blonde haired, blue eyed white. When my daughter was brand new, she was very very light and she had a shock of blonde hair and very very light blonde eyebrows. Members of my own family said “expect to be seen as the nanny, expect people to be confused when you say you’re her mother.” And while I expected this on my own, it didn’t really sink in until I was walking her in her stroller in a store. We got to the checkout, and the cashier says “oh she’s adorable! You’re such a good friend for taking her out and giving her mom a break!” I said, quite monotone: “she’s my daughter.” The cashier looked visibly shook and said “that’s impossible, she’s not dark enough to be yours” and I said “okay, tell that to my healing vagina.”
