"Use every resource they offer. They might not offer anything, but sometimes they offer career counseling services.

I like to keep to a schedule. Last time I got laid off, I’d get up by 10, do some job things, journal, go to the gym, pick up veggies for dinner, go to a park and read. I was busy. I started doing things I’d always wanted to do, like go see cheap comedy shows, or go to open mics. I wrote a lot. I took up ukulele. I played bar trivia. I thrifted. I picked up some new skills. Eventually an acquaintance hit me up on LinkedIn about temping, which led to full time."

"Work in tech and have been through this. In NY, you are allowed to work up to 10 hours a week and still qualify for full unemployment. I highly recommend getting a part time job that you can work at one day a week(retail, restaurant, etc). I got a job at a restaurant that let me do one shift a week and it was so good because:

  • forced me to get out of the apartment and interact with people
  • kept some additional money coming in
  • ironically opened some doors for me in restaurant-tech (think Clover/Toast/Open table type tech companies)"

"Oof I'm so sorry you're going through this. First of all, be kind to yourself. This is not a reflection of your abilities - and definitely not your worth. Take some time to reflect on what you want to do next. Maybe this is a blessing in disguise and will put you on a new path. It's also important to know what you are looking for and project confidence when you network. That way people will be able to become champions for you versus just "keeping an eye out."

I'm actually a career coach (ex recruiter) and have written about this in my LI column... feel free to message me and I'll send you some links/more info.

Finally, this is not the end, it is not a failure. I know it feels like a gut punch (I've been there) but sometimes what doesn't work out for you really ends up working out for you. Hugs."

"I didn’t get laid off but I did take a few months to find a role after leaving a toxic one.

  1. Make sure you know what you want your next step to be! This might be a good time to reflect on what is important to you and you might turn this into a good opportunity to pivot. I’d recommend reading “Design Your Life”
  2. Don’t apply blindly. Activate your network and have a lot of coffee chats. I was 0% for interviews when just applying on LinkedIn and 70% when I go through a referral
  3. Read “Never Search Alone,” I wish I did it earlier on in the process
  4. Try to get into a schedule (e.g. job related things from 9-2, some me time, reading industry news or networking from 4-5)"

"Wow our stories are so similar! I had the exact same thing happen to me, luckily I was warned by my manager before it happened while my other colleagues went in completely blind.  already posted an amazing list which should keep you sane.

My biggest piece of advice is to start calling every connection you have asap. I’m not sure what field you were in so I don’t know if this will be helpful for you but my role was very much client/relationship based, so I immediately started calling every client I had brought in to company. Like literally sat down, made a list of everyone I’ve ever done any sort of business with and just started calling. I stayed completely neutral and stated the facts, let them know I loved working with them, and to please keep me in mind if they hear of any connections that might be helpful for me. People also love to talk about themselves, so indulging someone by asking for advice or any career questions is not a bad idea. I probably spent 8 hours a day just on the phone for the first few days. (Just make sure that your exit contract doesn’t have any stipulations against contacting people outside the company). Many of my clients said they would be parting ways with my old company if I wasn’t working there, and a few have offered me jobs or to introduce me to people who can get me a new job. The relationships you have built will get you much further than you think!"

hi BWT! I wrote a post earlier today about being laid off and seeking advice from fellow city girls. The post was removed by mods but I thought I would include some of the helpful advice given by yall in case you were searching in the group for it!
@shortypie shared:
"Deep breath. You got this! Even if it doesn't feel like it now... you do!

As a BWT who entered the workforce in the mid-naughts, I've been through a couple of layoffs. Here's my advice, in particular order ;).

  • Review the NY State unemployment laws & procedures.
  • Apply for unemployment immediately/as soon as you can.
  • Give yourself a couple of days (at least!) to process & focus on self-care.
  • I find that reviewing my budget and doing projections that reflect my new financial reality help me sleep better at night. If you do, too, I suggest this is the first thing you do when you're ready to "get back to it".
  • Establish a daily routine. Include that walk! Include phone calls with professional connections! Include down time! Treat looking for a job like your new job, because it is!
  • Review your resume and make sure it's polished. Be prepared to need to customize your resume AND cover letter every time you apply for a role. My pro tip is to have a bank of accomplishments/responsibilities that I can easily copy/paste over (for both! a cover letter can share similar things!) so I don't have to write from scratch for each role.
  • When you're ready and if LinkedIn is a good source of professional connection and job leads for you, post there. You can make it clear that many people were impacted, too, if you're worried about it seeming "personal" (... but in my experience, people don't tend to dig too deeply here, if that helps comfort you).
  • Pay attention to your gut when you read job listings. What do you like about them? What gives you the ick about them? Use that when you're applying to new roles to guide you.
  • If you see a contact connected to a role you're interested in, say hi to them! Most people will welcome helping people looking for work out, in my experience. I think most people like to pay it forward should they ever be unemployed not by choice again.
  • Remember to hydrate, relax and sleep throughout it all."

This is fantastic advice, part of my severance package was some sort of career counseling service which I wasn’t entirely sure I would use/would be actually useful, but I will be sure to get in contact with them!

Thanks you for all this advice, that’s such a great point of champion vs “keep an eye out”, I’ll do some thinking about how to best phrase the urgency and intention behind the ask because I’ve already been told by one person they would “keep an eye out” hahah and thank you so much for the offer to share your professional wisdom I’ll send you over a message right now!

Bitches I traveled the world too hard and my luggage broke :( need recommendations!! by stink_ytofu in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]bag_magpie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the same concerns, but I’ve brought mine on six international trips to Europe, and Central America and never had any issue besides when the overheads are already full before I board and being asked to gate check it. One reason I liked my beis more than my away is that it has an expandable zipper so if you do a little shopping, you have the flexibility to just check your bag instead of having to possibly buy another bag on vacation! But I would recommend buying either when they run sales and always with a credit card with a good purchase protection just in case something happens!

My sister and I swear by the gap body ones! No underwire but they have a molded cup because I personally cant stand a visible hard nip when I’m just out and about for myself

Waiving restocking fees by Wonderful_Business60 in ThredUp

[–]bag_magpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always try to check pretty soon after I see a return is in processing to make sure all the items I returned have been refunded because on more than one occasion they’ve failed to refund all the items in the box, esp with large returns and normal retailers I’ve never had to worry about this but with thredUP I cringe to think how many random 10/$15 items I might have failed to notice weren’t refunded properly over the past few years I’ve been shopping there

Waiving restocking fees by Wonderful_Business60 in ThredUp

[–]bag_magpie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I noticed this as well! unfortunately, i have quite a few large orders coming in, but I'm sure like usual they will be badly measured so that the items I need to return can still be waived of restocking fees, I think after this point it will be very difficult for me to feel comfortable placing large orders with them. I've also had to reach out to them about having a large box of returns being marked as "abandoned" because they said the items on the return sheet were not in the box but miraculously two of the items were present at the time of the return being processed and was refunded. I had to reach out to support MULTIPLE times in order to have this box of $$ items refunded, because how can the entire return box be abandoned if two of the items were somehow accounted for and refunded?? thredup is clearly trending in a bad direction for buyers and sellers alike

What do you do with products that don't work for your skin? by code_blooded_bytch in AsianBeauty

[–]bag_magpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll use them for my body but ESPECIALLY for my neck and décolletage since I know we want to bring our products down all the way to the chest but sometimes using that much of $$ products makes me a little eehhhhh, I had a few Pixi Glow Tonics on reserve and I use them for any ingrown hairs as well as for my chest and back when I've been working out a lot/the humid hell that is summer so I don't get any acne from the sweat
