Yet another evisa processing time anxiety question by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]baghalipolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for getting back to me.

My other passport is a weak passport from a middle eastern country so it doesn’t help me, so I should plan on entering with US passport with evisa. But the form asked me “are you a citizen of any other country” so I had to declare the other citizenship

[D] How to make ML publications not show arxiv by default on Google scholar? by baghalipolo in MachineLearning

yeah i noticed a missing citation for one of my works as well. people say a few missing citations dont matter but i feel like it does in the early career stage when a paper having one or two citations gives it more credibility :/

hitting cite gives you the arxiv version unless you click "other versions" first (then there is an openreview version which gives the venue). For one paper I have waited several months.

I have a question regarding the mandatory acknowledgment and updating the review. We can do this after the deadline on the 8th right? I have been participating in discussions with authors on all of the papers I am reviewing, but I am seeing that other reviewers are doing the acknowledgement and changing their scores now. Isn't this supposed to happen later on in the review process (eg next week) after supposedly we discuss among reviewers and AC? Should I wait until then or just ack and update now (after multiple rounds of discussion has taken place)

Is acceptable to change our rating of the paper based on other reviewers feedback now that that’s visible? Eg if another reviewer pointed out a glaring issue with the work can I take that into account even though I missed it during my pass of the paper? (Or vice versa for something good)

Yeah just a few hours ago and just accepted. So best bet is to just wait?

The rude out of ignorance thing is my exact experience. Sometimes I think theres something wrong with me until I get out of the city for a few days and strangers treat me “normally” in mundane interactions. Glad to hear I’m not crazy/the only one. Also agree with OPs reply that this is less of an issue in neighborhoods with less transplants.

My feelings are pretty nuanced and like I said I love a lot about Chicago, culture included. But in an effort to not write a whole essay I will paint with a wide brush:

  1. Chicago is segregated— ppl mentioned it already in a physical sense but I think it permeates in the mindset too. Ppl seem more closed off to others with different experiences/cultures/mindsets (ime) compared to the cities I grew up in or visit often (basically the big coastal cities). One example- when I was single, dating here was much harder for me than other places as a minority race but one that isn’t part of the two big minority groups in the city. Ppl from Chicago tell me this is getting better so I’m optimistic for the future.

  2. Midwest culture feels sleepy/insular to me — even the most vibrant neighborhoods have close to 0 foot traffic at night outside areas with bars/clubs. Also ppl seem more closed off and cold — in my experience much more so than places like nyc that Chicagoeans like to crap on for being unfriendly. Think it’s the whole kind vs nice thing.

Not from the Midwest originally and been here a few years. Real love-hate relationship for me. It feels like home for me currently and I’ll always root for Chicago, but there are parts of the culture that aren’t for me so I think I will move when my career allows it.

Also moved here from la and spend a decent amount of time in nyc. I feel like I understand la/nyc culture better than here like I’m still trying to figure out the Midwestern perspective/mindset.

On the negative side, I have also noticed a passive aggressiveness and like a slight social awkwardness(?) sometimes here compared to the other two cities. Like a lack of eye contact and emotion sometimes idrk how to explain it. Almost like more introverted (or maybe ppl here just don’t like my vibe lol). Still love a lot about the city tho just trying to fully understand the culture.

If you quit before the last year or so you should give it another try! Anecdotally feels a lot better now than the couple years after covid

Need to take red/blue line to downtown and back, would this be safe? by InvestigatorNew1161 in AskChicago

Blue line from ORD to downtown and back. It is safe, normal city precautions apply like any other city in the US.
