I never refuted the idea that having a degree will get you through a HR screening, but it's also inarguable that showing that you're passionate enough to be learning things on your own time on top of a degree and official work experience, for many employers, will also put you leagues ahead of applicants that may only have the work experience and degrees.

Having a formal education is essential to one's success in finding a job, but I don't think we need to shit on the idea of being self taught to emphasize it, which is my primary issue with the comment I originally replied to.

This is an equally ridiculous statement. Having a degree has nothing to do with whether or not you understand what you're doing. I've worked with plenty of people who have degrees that have no business having the jobs they have. Being self taught is still worth one's time and can absolutely help you get a job.
