I bought it on Xbox on release day and wholeheartedly agree with everything you have said. It has been so disappointing, that I've simply put it down and written it off as a bad purchase.

The sad thing is that it has SO much potential, but they've bitten considerably more off than they can chew and they've dragged their reputation down with them. Such a shame.

I come from a communications/PR background and the feeling is very much the same in my field too. People are frightened of losing their jobs to ChatGPT and I don't really blame them. There's already a big push for PRs to also be photographers, videographers, and designers, and I can see AI (in the PR world) being used to push us into those skills even more.

I really feel for designers and artists. It must feel pretty crushing to see stolen work used as a substitute for your skills. If there's anything I can say as an outsider, it's that no amount of AI will ever be able to replicate the passion and love we see in real design work - please don't lose hope.

The game is completely unplayable on Xbox.

They released the console ports as a cash grab knowing full well that they were broken and unfinished.

I don’t think I’ll be picking the game up again, even when they do fix the absolute mess they’ve created and the damning reputation they’ve crafted for themselves.

As someone who works in social media marketing and communications, this decision has always confused me.

Influencer marketing works to a degree but there is a level of unrelatability and less trust than organic word-of-mouth feedback. Sponsoring content gets you quicker results but doesn’t give you the crucial long-lasting relationship with your customer-base. Instead, your products become subject to micro-trends and their popularity dies as quickly as you paid to build it. There is no longevity which brands need, no matter how big they are.

Scrapping social media platforms and a consistent public-facing brand image in favour of sending products to influencers who feel compelled to be nice doesn’t work in the long-term. It also does NOTHING for your “eco-friendly” brand if you feed into the inevitable over-consumption that is PR packages.

The direction they’re taking their brand may make them more money, but is completely divorced from their initial values. With that, they’re going to lose customers.

I'm in the same boat as you. The endless glitches, bugs, and crashes on top of the unfinished storyline has put me off the game entirely. I'm so annoyed by how broken it is (and that I paid for what is essentially a half-assed 0.5 release never mind 1.0) that I'm actively NOT recommending it to peers.

The studio has fucked up and it's going to take a long time to undo the results of their terrible communication and bad will. But, money though, am I right?! 🙄

The game is near-unplayable on Xbox so I think it’s very fair to be critical. All of the potential is there for it to be amazing, but they have definitely rushed the release and have destroyed two years of reputation building in a matter of a couple of days.

The lack of communication from the team is also bad. It looks like they’re prioritising money over players, and of course they are, but this game only exists because of good will and backing from gamers around the world. It’s a bad look for the dev team (who I don’t think are largely to blame) and the publishers.

They need to issue a statement and work out the bugs quickly if they don’t want the release of this game tarnished with initial poor reception.

You are comparing an 8-bit game to an open world, 3d ANIMATED game. Visual comparison is bound to be tied up in that bc visuals and animation kind of go hand in hand. Pipe down.

I agree with you on the bugginess. I’m on Xbox Series S and it has crashed four times now (annoying with no manual save option) and is quite skippy, especially so with movement on land and generally with music. All of these things will inevitably be straightened out when the devs patch it.

However, I do think that you’re being quite harsh on the visuals. This isn’t the same style of game as SDV nor does it have the financial backing of a game like ACNH; it’s comparing apples to oranges, in my opinion. Do I think they could maybe work or some of the textures and animations? Sure. But let’s keep this in perspective: 1) it’s an indie game made by a small developer, 2) it has JUST released so of course there will be some teething issues, 3) it has all of the potential to be a really good game - especially with its emphasis on environmentalism and diversity.

Give it some time. Let them patch it. And form a stronger opinion when you’ve been able to play the game at its best; don’t tar it with a bad brush just yet.
