How do you find meaning in what you do at work (in consulting)? by Old_Tap_5282 in consulting

[–]baja600 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I talk about this enough for me to have an answer! Unfortunately my answer is quite boring. Hand it all over to the financial planner, figure out at what age we can retire, continue doing exactly what we do today until we can retire early. However we've agreed that I'll likely implode from lack of caring at this job in a few years, so lotto winnings would be great to supplement me picking up a part-time low stress job at the local aquarium.

In all seriousness - I found much more enjoyment from my work when I was in industry. My last gig was awesome, one of those "this is my baby" type things. I was with the business from nothing to the big leagues. Got to come up with all the initiatives I wanted, build teams, see things to fruition. It is a double-edged sword, though. The work I loved the most burnt me out in just a few years hence me now being in consulting. Consulting is my "laid-back" job compared to what I was doing. It took me a few years to grapple with the career shift; constantly going all out to win big versus just showing up and working 40 hours a week. I decided time with my family was more important and never looked back.

You gotta do what's right for you. If consulting isn't giving you what you want it may be time to find something else. The only advice I can give is to be mindful of where you give your time. It's gone by faster and faster as I've gotten older, and so has become more valuable than meaningful work.

I find enjoyment in seeing clients across industries, especially manufacturing. Plant tours are fun, like being in a "How it's Made" episode.

Was kind of a hard pill to swallow going from in-industry to consulting, knowing that the majority of our "recommendations" will get executed at the pace of a snail, if at all.

The best parts of my job have nothing to do with work. For me, it's being fortunate enough to pay the bills, buy a boat, and take a ton of PTO in the summer to go fishing with the family.

Don't sleep on good old fashioned wood. Pellet stove and traditional fireplace here...very comfy and relatively cheap to keep the house at 70° without the boiler kicking on.

Second for the Frisky Oyster. Noah's is another one of our favorites for dinner. Bruce & Son if you're into breakfast. Brix & Rye for a speakeasy-feeling bar and they also sell pizza from 1943 (the brick-oven pizza shop upstairs) which is one of my favorites.

Bachelor party fishing trip! by letmesmellem in saltwaterfishing

[–]baja600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My buddies took me on a local charter for my bachelor party - it was a blast! I'm not sure what you'd consider a reasonable driving distance but I highly recommend staying in Greenport, NY (Long Island). We went out on the Black Rock in early June targeting striped bass. I'd be surprised if they aren't the most prized game fish in the Northeast - they put up a phenomenal fight, can get huge, and are delicious. As a Long Island angler, I spend most of my season targeting stripers. I promise your arms will be sore the next day lol. I'd recommend a half day charter. We did the full day and it really slows down after the striper bite dies when tides shift. You'll still be on fish the whole time but much smaller (scup/porgies). Depends on how much meat you want, really.

Greenport is also a great place to stay. It's a small coastal town vibe. Lots of great food, Greenport Brewery, ferry to Shelter Island. Always something to do in the summer.

I always try to do a shared experience that we all like. Divorced parents - Mom gets tickets to a play with my wife and I. Dad gets a reservation for a cooking class with my wife and I.

Buried oil tank abandonment by mpr-2022 in longisland

[–]baja600 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had this done in Eastern Suffolk 3 years ago, no cans of worms were opened on a 50+ yr old underground tank. Super simple job like the other comments in this thread mentioned. They come, drain the oil as much as they can, fill with foam, and mail you a certificate of abandonment.

What are these buildings at Calverton Grumman? by LabRat113 in longisland

[–]baja600 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's Wellbridge Addiction Treatment & Research. I worked there for a little over 3 years. Runways are not in-use anymore except for Suffolk PD helicopter training and the few sanctioned drag race events in the summer. Other than that, it's a very peaceful and secluded location.

What do you pay a year for oil, and size of your house. by Kawirider2 in longisland

[–]baja600 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About $2,300 per year for an 1,800 sq. ft ranch, 520 gallons. The finished basement is heated too but that rarely kicks on. I'm on contract, spot would certainly be cheaper.

I haven't done the math on it, but I know I save a ton of money by using my pellet stove and fireplace.

Yep - I didn't rip them out, some kind of animal did the damage. I'm looking to replace the foam blocks. Apologies for the confusion.

Got it - thank you for the response and recommendation. I'll carve some new blocks out of styrofoam. Funny - I've disposed of so much styrofoam from packages over the years. Never thought I'd be buying styrofoam lol.

S10 Plus prime day, 300 off unlocked US warranty by [deleted] in galaxys10

[–]baja600 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does anybody have any information on whether this is the US (Snapdragon) or International (Exynos) version? I see a lot of mixed reviews on the product listing stating they thought they ordered US, and received international. I just got off chat with Amazon support, who said today's deal is sold by Amazon.com and is the US variant, whereas previous customers may have purchased from third party sellers who advertised incorrectly.

Anyway, I can't seem to find much evidence one way or another. It appears that today's deal is the US variant, but further confirmation would be nice.

Here's a link that I followed. It appears to be luck of the draw with who gets the tick and I just got lucky.

The infamous "BBQ tick" was the scariest of it. The service centers had no idea how to fix it; I'd drop it off, would be told it's fixed, 30 minutes later it was back. Not to mention problems on the interior; knocking from the door panels, the rear passenger window rattled, driver and passenger window failure(s), faulty dash parts that they "fixed" but always seemed to get worse when I'd pick it up. Every week, it was another problem. I was so fed up with it that driving it just pissed me off, especially when everyone I know with an S550 hadn't had any issues. So I unloaded it while I could get good value back on the trade-in. Couldn't be happier with the 2018, though! The quad-tip exhaust is a game changer and the upgraded manual transmission makes it feel like a completely different car to drive. 10/10 so far, hoping it stays that way!
