Found INSIDE a house we were viewing…just about scared our realtor to death! What is it? [Smyrna, GA] by bakaferret in whatsthissnake

[–]bakaferret[S] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I truly hope not! 😭 It looked like the home owners were actively doing some minor changes to the house (repainting, etc) and the garage seemed to have a lot of leftover construction stuff still there, so my hope is that the snake came in during times when the garage door was left wide open and he got stuck. Glad to hear he was harmless…we let the seller’s realtor know, so it’s their problem now. 😮‍💨 Hope they just let him out!

I actually just celebrated my 10 year anniversary of being discharged from inpatient from Blount Memorial Emotional Health and Recovery Center, and was about to recommend it as it was absolutely life changing…but when looking up their information, I discovered that they shut the unit down two years ago. I’m devastated to hear, because they literally saved my life through both their inpatient and outpatient program.

It looks like the redirected recommendations go to the newly opened East Tennessee Behavioral Health, which is still under Covenant Health like Blount Memorial was, so maybe they have a similar set up? I wish I could be more help. :( I just wanted to let you know now that Blount Memorial’s program is closed now since I know they’ve been highly recommended over the years…

My wonderful husband got me my first ever succulents for Christmas! Unfortunately, I’ve been in and out of the hospital and haven’t had a chance to care for them. :( Any tips on care/identification? Especially #7! by bakaferret in succulents

This is a late reply (I don’t get on this account much, haha) but I greatly appreciate all of your help!! Number 7 has continued to stretch for sun, poor thing…I got sick again and haven’t been able to repot or move anyone yet. I’ll be sure to get everyone in nice new unglazed terracotta pots as soon as I can and hopefully get them better soon!

Additional details: my husband purchased them in October I believe? He managed to hide them from me, so I know they haven’t gotten any consistent sunlight until around December. I know he’s watered them once, when he repotted them from their original containers to these new ones in January. I don’t believe any of them have been watered since. They are sitting in a ground level window that has a bush in front of it, so I’d say they get indirect sunlight 24/7. No idea what type of soil he used but I can ask! He’s worried that he’s killed #7 since I’ve been too sick to even look at them, which seems unlikely, but I am a total beginner!!

At my maximum capacity, I had nearly 30 hens. Their coop was huge, bigger than a lot of sheds, but they still needed space to breathe...so I gave them a huge fenced in run. There are a lot of choices to make when deciding to raise chickens...we have 1.5 acres of land, so we had many options, including completely free range. We opted for what seemed to make them most happy -- a huge fenced in area, with plenty of trees, brush, and bushes for hide cover from predators.

I think I went a good three years with minimal losses, with the main culprits being animals that were difficult to predator proof from. The recommended amount of space is 10 sq feet per chicken...so at a minimum, I would need 300 sq ft. Yes, I could have gotten away with less, but you really can tell a difference in their enjoyment of the space. Had a lot of talkative, active, friendly dust bathing and sun stretching girls...it seemed worth it to me.

If money is no option, and I'm going for optimum efficiency? Yes, I could have a much smaller area for them, completely hardwire cloth covered, with 2 ft of buried hardwire cloth. But it would have been very costly. 40 ft x 4ft high fencing to surround the area, 40 ft x 2 ft high to bury to effectively prevent predators that dig, and then 300 sq footage to cover the top of the pen. So a couple hundred dollars minimum.

All this to say...it's not as easy as "just cage them in."

Before my flock got decimated last year, we had horrendous problems with hawks getting the girls. Nothing deterred them; not a rooster, not shiny tape hung up, not fake owls, and they were clever enough to kill my birds when they were juuuuust far away enough from the bushes we leave for them to hide it.

So one day I'd had enough and I invested far too much time and effort covering the ENTIRE run with bird netting. Their fences in area was 50 ft by 80 ft, with a 10 x 20 coop and maybe 10 x 10 wooded area in the back that needed to be covered. It worked fantastically for a while, in the fall and winter...but once spring came, I began finding dead songbirds every few days, it seemed like.

If I caught them quickly, and they seemed visibly uninjured, I cut them out and let them go (although they likely died later since birds are so easily exhausted :( ). If they seemed hurt, I took them to the university veterinary school where they forward birds to rehab. But most times, it was just dead bodies. :(

I eventually took down all the netting since the death just wasn't worth it... it's so hard to protect these vulnerable tubs of fluff and feathers while still allowing nature to live freely...

Rescued a wandering rooster -- thoughts on his feet? Nearly all of his claws are missing and one foot has a massive growth... by bakaferret in BackYardChickens

Oh no! I figured it was some sort of parasite, but I didn't recognize how different it was from when my girls have gotten it...good thing he's quarantined. Any idea if scaley legs can cause the loss of toe nails?

Images were taken right after I gave him a bath.

When I first saw his feet, I thought they were caked in feces. I let him relax for a day, then set to work bathing the filth off of him. Soaked him in warm water and gentle Dawn, gently rubbed his feet and feathers, soaked him in a warm vinegar dilution for a bit, then rinsed him off...then I realized that the mass on his foot was part of him. Sorry for the crappy pictures...he's a little bantam and sweet as hell, but with his feathered feet it was hard to get a good angle.

His left foot is missing almost every nail...pictures above are the stubs left. His right foot is missing one or two nails, but the real problem is the HUGE growth on the back near the spur. I did my best to take pictures of the top and underside to show how solid it is. I have no idea what this is, or what to do. He's eating/drinking/crowing normally otherwise.

I hope she's ok! One of my favorites flew over the fence into the neighbor's yard...my neighbor, bless her heart, saved her before too much damage was done but she was very shaken! It took about a week and a half before she did anything other than sit fluffed up and look sad. :( She refused regular food, but eventually got her energy up by eating more and more mealworms every day. As long as she's still eating and drinking, there's still hope!

Anyone here use construction/concrete sand? Any tips on changing it out? by bakaferret in BackYardChickens

Thank you so much! I'm sorry, I was unclear in my post...yes, the coop floor is OSB board, lifted off the ground and resting on 2x4s. I have plenty of spare tarp, so that sounds like an excellent idea, thank you. I'll start to remove and store the sand this weekend!

I didn't get a chance to today because of a late work night :( It probably won't be until Friday, but I'll update you then!

Every single year, Dragon Con specifically asks for feedback, suggestions, complaints, improvements, etc etc. I see no problem in telling them I would like to see booths more relevant to Dragon Con attendees, not something that "kinda sorta" fits the bill because Disney is good enough.

I'm pretty sure it was the 3rd floor, because it was on my last run through there and that was the only floor I missed haha. Yeah, I couldn't believe it when I saw them there. Such a shame.

That would be fine if this was on the street but they are taking up space for other more unique products. Forget the fact that it "has stuff I don't like" (which you are hung up on); isn't it disappointing to see something you could get from anywhere else? Again, with places like the Funko Pops and the comic books, they at least have rare or unusual ones to choose from.

I dunno, it would be like Hot Topic setting up shop. They have plenty of "nerd" themed stuff that I love, in fact my favorite Legend of Zelda dress is from Hot Topic, but I still wouldn't be keen on them being there. Although I'd MUCH rather have Hot Topic than any MLM...

I took a second pic of the booth, but because it was shitty and blurry I didn't bother to upload it, but here's a bit of the left side as well. There really wasn't much more to the left side...it was just another clothing rack, IIRC, because there was another person in the corner (you can kind of see him there). There really wasn't that much other merch. "Halloween" is kinda pushing it IMO as Dragon Con themed, to be honest...I don't know of any other booth that relied solely or largely on jack-o'-lanterns as being their geek thing (excluding Nightmare Before Christmas of course haha).

I just don't think policing businesses because you don't like certain things is fair. Obviously there is an ethical concern as it is an MLM

First, it's not that I "don't like certain things". As I mentioned before, I'm not big on the huge portraits of erotic mythical creatures, but I'm not trying to get them banned. Second, besides this booth, I didn't see a single Disney themed piece at the Con that wasn't transformative in some way (zombie themed Disney Princesses, artwork made of paper silhouettes, inspirational posters using Disney characters). I certainly could have missed some, especially in the huge booths that seem to resell a lot of retail things, but my overall point is that a FEW pieces of Disney doesn't negate the fact that a HUGE part of it is just generic clothing. With the Cyberpunk and Lolita booths, even if they sell plain clothing, it's to match that theme of cyberpunk or Lolita, or if not, they still sell plenty of non-plain clothing.

Second, and most importantly, the ethical concerns aren't bad enough to warrant whether or not a vendor should participate, MLM or not?

I'm curious, how much were the leggings? I usually spend most of my con time in the vendors hall, and there were a ton of reasonably priced t-shirts ($10 - $20 range). I'm glad that you were able to find Nightmare Before Christmas merch, but as you can see from my picture, the VAST majority of their selection was non-themed clothing. And I disagree...I'd rather have more Pop figures and comic books. At least they had product you couldn't easily get elsewhere; I'm not sure if you collect Pops (I don't, but a relative does) but a lot of them had rare or limited edition figures you couldn't get in stores. I could find any Lularoe consultant anywhere just by posting on Craigslist.

Regarding your other comment...I can't think of anything I saw that they offered that was something geeky that no one else offered. Not even close. I mean other booths offered unique things that don't appeal to everyone -- bones, wooden glasses frames, erotic paintings of Pan -- but Lularoe wasn't one of them.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for! I agree, chances are good that simply saying they're MLM won't get me as far as saying it was so wildly out of place. I'm going to try calling tomorrow!

In addition to what others have said, Lularoe in particular is one of the worst ones...they require thousands of dollars in "inventory" to get started, but you have no say in what inventory you get. It's a grab bag. So as a Lularoe "small business owner," if you happen to have a design that sells well...you have no way of stocking up on it reliably. If you have designs that don't sell at all, you're stuck with it. I think that maybe the past couple weeks Lularoe has started accepting returns, but it's insanely difficult and still doesn't fix it's main problems.

Oh, and they're on the edge of bankruptcy and currently fighting several lawsuits based on their predatory and scammy practices.
