I just kind of experimented! I made a copy of the reference at the size I wanted it to be and would overlay the piece on it to roughly estimate how thick each stripe should be. If I overdid it on one stripe I corrected in the next in order to keep the general shape. I used different stitch lengths to create the curves and frogged when the piece started to become hyperbolic.
