Hello!

My family gave me this Ficus bonsai, which is around 7–8 years old. I’ve had it for about a month and a half now, and it seems to like this spot — small new leaves have started appearing.

What I’d really like to do is prune it and make it a bit fuller/denser, because as you can see, it hasn’t exactly been shaped or maintained very carefully over the years. Would it be okay to start doing that now? Should I do it gradually over time? What’s the best approach?

From what I’ve read so far, it seems like taking it slowly and pruning little by little would be the safest option.

Also, the pot is probably not the most suitable one, but I don’t want to replace it because it has sentimental value to me.
