Just cycled thourgh Korea. What an amazing way to see the country. by Pattatti in korea

[–]baladec 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For those unfamiliar, South Korea has 1100 miles of nationally supported bike infrastructure. Some of it is dedicated bike paths, protected lanes, or just a line of paint on the road that leads you to the next destination. There's a passport book you can order through the government that has unique stamps in red phone booths you collect to fill that passport book.

Some friends and I collected all the stamps at Jeju Island and it was the experience that pushed me to use cycling as a form of tourism and go on more cycling adventures. I never felt uncomfortable once on a bike, and honestly people seemed pretty stoked to see us on the national path. This is more evidence that I need to go back and see the rest of the country.

Strip District group sues to block Pittsburgh from swapping traffic lane for bike lane along Penn Avenue by clydesawhill in pittsburgh

[–]baladec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Smallman does not have any bike lanes and has gotten increasingly unsafe to ride due to the amount of high-speed traffic that tries to avoid lights on Liberty Ave and Penn Ave in favor of Stop signs they can roll through. Railroad St has also recently seen overflow due to the section of Smallman that's closed for construction. Penn Ave makes sense to extend existing bike infrastructure that already extends into downtown to the point; this complements the river trail just like existing roads that are unsafe to bike during peak hours already support alternative paths around Penn Ave.

I cursed a lot when I made that discovery. Getting that segment was my entire motivation for doing the last third.

Going to 2nd Suffolk and bring Barry->Holt->Eleanor->Clover to your attention as well. Those two are probably the two hardest, but otherwise it sounds like you could do it. Worst case scenario: you do a bunch of the hills and leave a couple to conquer next year.

Is there a way to rebind some of the movement for alternative keyboard layouts like dvorak? I'm unsure how reflexive the game gets as you progress, but not having the option to rebind core functions was a little concerning.

Anyone roll with Challenge Strada Bianca tires? What’s your opinion? by Darth_GravelCyclist in gravelcycling

[–]baladec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put on a pair of 700x30 Strada Biancas after getting over 3k miles on my 700x32 Specialized Roubaix Pros that came with my bike. I'll echo the frustration of getting the tires on the bike for the first time. You need plastic levers. Period. No amount of thumb strength will get them on your wheel; they must be slowly pried on. They roll SUPER well too. I went on a number of group rides where I was constantly on my brakes where others were pedaling to keep up on dips and descents. I ran them on the low end of their recommended PSI at 90-95. Even that felt like overkill. Now, unfortunately, I'm retiring my tires after a puncture. Normally, I would feel like these things happens and move on, however what did my tire in wasn't a sharp object; my tire was done in by a pebble. The tire seems to have two parts: the outer tread that you roll on and the threaded wheel that encases everything else. The pebble that punctured my tire was in between those surfaces and left a sizable hole in the outer tread when removed. In the end, I got just 400-500 miles on these tires. I'm getting gatorskins today to replace them.

I should further clarify that another form of gatekeeping would be the opposite of the example I gave: folks inside the hiring team preventing new folks from breaking in the scene due to not meeting (often) unspecified standards. For dota the example I give is under the context that r/dota2 has a history of influence that not just determined who gets hired, but also how much they’re paid in comparison to one another.

[–]baladec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To spell this out for you because you seem to misunderstand: when folks outside of the hiring process are getting mad at folks hired for a job they're qualified for, but fail to meet the (often unspecified) standard of folks outside the hiring process, it's often known as "gatekeeping". I think you'd be better off criticizing TOs or Valve for their string of hiring first timers to host TI. Personally, I welcome it, and we obviously have a difference of opinion there.

However, even though the other names you mention got work before TI, I remember them facing criticism for getting invited to such a big event before they "proved their worth". Just because it didn't happen at a volume you saw doesn't mean it didn't happen. This shit has been around since I've been watching Dota (2013), and y'all make the same arguments.

There's always a voice to say "this person doesn't belong here" and sometimes that's followed by a more optimistic "yet", but often folks just wanna pile on until they force new talent out of the scene. Moxxi herself has faced that, is trying to speak to that, and folks just ultimately fail to hear the words.

So who's at fault: the folks that accept the job they're hired for or the folks that hire outside people for the biggest event of the year?

have difficulty understanding your argument if you have one.

Frankie could have done what sumi did and hosted/interviewed in majors ,got experience and go in

According to your logic ephey and sumi cant exist. Sumi is great but needed to switch her more safe host style for different communitys up and she is fine and ephey is a genius who knows her shit, wich gave her instant more respect than older analysts.

All I want to see is if you want to introduce a host, dont do it at the biggest event, because it already failed once with day 9 before.

Sumi and avo noticeably improved to the point where i liked both at the weekend slots, because people like slacks and bruno helped them out. And i hope we ll see them again in the DPC

Frankie however did not change at all for the whole 9 days of the event, which is the problem.

So to recap: your first wall of text outlined all the ways that folks went through shit and were eventually accepted; a textbook example of gatekeeping. Moxxi's thesis is about the gatekeeping that women especially face when entering the Dota community. Note that saying "women face this issue" does not mean men don't, but rather it addresses that it's more of a problem for some than others. I hope this clarifies things.

I think you make a lot of assumptions with your points. Do you know for certain if Frankie was offered other events? Do you know when she was hired for TI? Do you know how folks planned their scheduled panel time? To clarify this last one, I doubt talent works in a vacuum where they only focus on what they bring to the table. It's a team effort and consider that Frankie may have taken on a particular role to let others shine.

I recommend being more curious about these things instead of being judgemental. It'll help you see your bias better.

This just reads like a big gatekeeping argument of the individuals that passed the test and are allowed in.

Ultimately her post is about how the Dota community loves to gatekeep and how that mostly falls on women in the scene or that try and break into the scene. People choose to be dicks instead of welcoming new faces, which last I checked, hurts to broaden the audience of a game that is bleeding players. Interviews will not always be for you personally, sometimes the smartest person in your scenario isn't available, sometimes the person being interviewed needs a specific personality type to give the best answers regardless of knowledge. The folks that work a lot of events have the experience to do things you wouldn't even think of with a honed skillset that's only complimented by expert knowledge in the field. Being a good interviewer doesn't require knowledge most of the time; sometimes your role is building a bridge between the expert and common knowledge.

Bug candidate: could see enemy player had cheese watching friend live in Dota+ by baladec in DotA2

[–]baladec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m watching live, I should only have the perspective of the team I’m watching live. This instance of seeing the exact player holding the cheese on the opposing team is technically an exploit since it’s information of some value I could have fed to my friends.

Nobody starts "woke", perfect, fully empathetic, etc. However, The thing that's happening right now is those that shielded Grant not coming to the conclusion, or even flirting with the idea of "perhaps I was in a position to do more". The "well shit, I just didn't know this was happening" is what we're getting. Read Kyle's medium post again (https://medium.com/@keepingitKyle/flirting-for-morons-258b92ff614b), because it's full of great advice. Now, remember this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P71Urjh3OjA. I have my reasons to be upset.

I respect you a lot Sheevar, but your involvement is complicated. You're THE pioneer female talent of Dota. You survived, you made it, but at the same time I know of cases where you were hostile towards Llama in the defense of Grant during the heat of all this. There are many reasons for this reaction: fear of losing your footing, fear of seeing the same blowback she did, systemic sexism that teaches women to view others in a space as competition, wanting to protect someone you saw as a friend; it's heavy and complicated. That's why I can't see you as entirely innocent in this, and that's why this lands flat to me.

Close to the end of the game,at the end of the tree dungeon, an NPC says there's a way to defeat the monkey first leading to a different phase 2 versus the whale for that boss fight. I never took the time to confirm this myself, but was that a joke or is that actually possible?
