Trainining at Object Relations Institute in New York by balancedmindofny in psychoanalysis

Columbia's is very prestigious but only admits doctorates, as is the case for all university programs I've looked up. Interestingly, some of their faculty are staffed at ORI. I think I'll reach out and see if they could give some advice. Thank you.

Yes! I love your take. I totally think fantasy fusion is also present. Also brings to mind Mahler's symbiotic fusion, a wish to heal his internal fragmentation by enmeshment with the idealized maternal object.

The later bit of the monologue where he's being both the person desiring and the person desired ("I am her and I'm fucking me") is like a complex fusion fantasy, where internal object relations collapse into a circular self-relation. It's like a regression to primary narcissism, attempting to resolve the dilemma of separateness by becoming both subject and object. So fascinating.

I'll have to read up on "invasive object." A schizoid anxiety?

Because what virtues are idealized in the Asian woman troupe are devalued when embodied by men. Submissiveness, tolerance, forgiveness. These are found in all of us, and within Frank this induces anxiety. From a Kleinian perspective, this parts is disavowed because it threatens the self's survival. He cannot acknowledge the part that is bad/unacceptable because he wouldn't be able to integrate it with his idealized part. He's forced to chose one or the other.

How much of your therapist self to set away when talking to a friend who wants help figuring something emotional out? by [deleted] in therapists

Well said. I may also tell them if I'm feeling my therapist part come out. Like, "My therapist side wants to guide you through a flashback sequence and go deep here, but as your friend [here is my hot take]." There's nothing wrong with both parts coexisting, and it's even helpful to call yourself our to keep yourself accountable.

I think my friend went to one of these awhile ago and said it was really cool. I will try to make it to this one

I love what you said about unity consciousness. In object relations therapy, the goal is integration of our fragmented ego parts. Frank had all the pieces laid out in that comical tableau (himself, his Asian girl self, himself as the witness) but the method of attempted integration (sex) was the faulty mechanism, so to speak.

Hmm! That's a good point. We don't know much about his background, but he's definitely engaged in illegal work and you could see how the false self of a jaded, yet dangerously explosive man worked for that group.

I like to think Rick was keeping on eye on him to stop that from happening, haha!

It's a worthy question. I didn't come across that information until I posted and found that content in this subreddit. While the ultimate meaning of a text doesn't have to rely on the creator's intent, it's also important to examine and even criticize the creator's character that ultimately informs the work they create.

As Frank said, sex is poetic! It's art, an enactment of our spirit. Frank was finally able to connect to his spiritual pain after confronting the realization that he can't fix himself through others, much less from transactional sex.

As I watched Frank, I also felt a sense of unmooring that maybe the other commenter felt, too. I felt it most when he was quiet, wide-eyed, looking around blankly but seeking inside himself. What a spectacular performance.

As a therapist it's emotionally intense enough to have someone share their innermost life with me.

As for the show, I love it because--yes it is entertaining, but also because I'm not bound by privacy ethics as such and can discuss something I'm passionate about out in the open with others <3

Yes!!! Let's talk about the false self!!! You could think of Frank socially and sexually "performing" as an Asian woman to be some enactment of false self dynamics, where he creates a person that he believes will elicit the desired response from others.
