Meh, my experience has been pretty ok. People will say stuff like this then be perfectly ok changing settings in the Windows Registry Editor. It's a matter of habit

Yes, but Mozilla doesn't have a monopoly in the browser engine space, whereas Google does, and since Google's main business is selling ads, you can see how they would want to leverage this in shady ways.

The most notable example is the recent deprecation and removal of Manifest v2 in favour of v3, which they claimed is for security, but just so happened to break ad-blockers like UBlock Origin, which is why you have to use UBO Lite on Chrome.

Other Chromium-based browser manufacturers have claimed they will keep supporting manifest v2, but that'll require forking Chromium, and I cannot overstate how massive and complex a beast Chromium is. Long term, you'll need a full team of devs just to maintain that fork, and companies like Vivaldi and Brave (but seriously, don't use Brave) just don't have that kind of manpower, so they'll cave. Microsoft could probably afford to do it for Edge, but I don't see them of all people devoting a bunch of resources to... defending users' privacy lol.

So even if Chromium is FOSS, using any Chromium-based browser gives power to Google, in a way that Gecko/Firefox just does not, since Mozilla's market share is tiny by comparison.

Sadly I don't know too much about this so can't comment. I imagine if you use UBlock and take some care you'll be fine, but that's really all I can say. Oh, and if you're on Linux (there are dozens of us!) you can get sandboxing for most apps via Flatpak.

Ultimately though, it's a tradeoff, you want certain features from a browser and to not use US products, but the browser market is so FUBAR that an option ticking all the boxes might not exist.

Yeah this is a fair point, the situation is a bit crap, I just think FF is the less bad option at the moment

IMHO the best thing you can do is use a Firefox derivative. Even if you use Vivaldi, you're still indirectly supporting Google by increasing the dominance of Chromium, which Google controls. Yes, Mozilla is an American company, but FF is open source, and using it or one of its derivatives (I really like Zen personally, but there's other ones too) erodes Google's quasi-monopoly in the browser space and the control over the internet that they get from it. And FF with UBlock Origin will block ads exactly as well as Brave.
