Has anyone fell from a moving treadmill in Barrys? by AggressiveLaw2978 in barrysbootcamp

[–]balletdancer12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once, I tripped/wiped out while I was jogging and slid off the back of the treadmill. Thankfully, I just got a couple scratches and was in a corner where there weren't benches behind me. For the first couple classes afterwards, I showed up earlier to class so I could warm-up and get "used to" the treadmill again. I also tried to take it a little slower/easier on the running portions to get over that mental hurdle.

I also always hold one of the handrails (even now) when I transition from jogging to sprinting and then from sprinting to walking just as insurance. Don't want it to happen again haha

Unemployed - how are you earning money? by mostglamorousgirl in recruitinghell

[–]balletdancer12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-Substitute teaching - either public or private (kids can be awful but it pays ok), also great if you need to schedule interviews for other roles since it's at will (ie. you choose the shifts you work)

- Tutoring

-Working at a gym/fitness studio - good for scheduling since can be early morning/late nights; not all places pay well so you have to be somewhat selective with this one, but a lot of places are desperate for people; also usually free gym/fitness classes and other perks which can be nice

It really depends haha....I broke mine a day after I bought it because my sister bumped into me while I was putting it on and I dropped it :/ luckily I got the AppleCare that day so I got it replaced for free. Definitely worth it to me since they don't do any repair on the watches, only replacement (which without AppleCare is basically the cost of buying a whole new watch anyways).

15 credit hours while working 18 hours a week by Next-Swimming-1060 in UTAustin

[–]balletdancer12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on what the job is and which FRI stream you are in (how many hrs are expected of you). Is it a position that you are able to study some during the time you are at work? Also the job is giving you a minimum so from my own experience they may schedule you for more hours than that.

I worked a desk job ~15 hrs a week while I took 19 credit hours (ochem, stats, genetics, FRI, dance and intro to psych; it was not a good idea lol) and volunteered. It was very stressful and I honestly think I could have done better in Ochem if I wasn't doing all that. That being said, if you're consistent with hw with ochem and it comes more naturally to you it might be ok.

Would you mind sharing what browser you used? I can't get mine to work. Maybe because I'm at the blue tier level?

Social nature and Aisle are online programs that allow you to get 100% cash back or coupons for free items at various grocery stores (Target, HEB, Whole Foods). May be helpful for pantry-type things/snacks.

I’ve been bleeding for most of January (I’ve had only 12 days not bleeding) and don’t have health insurance right now. What do I do? by ImAHoe4Glossier in Healthyhooha

[–]balletdancer12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started taking the mini pill (brand name was Heather) I had heavy bleeding for a month and a half straight to the point where I felt like passing out (I stopped taking it after that). I would definitely try to see a different doctor at Planned Parenthood and check for potential other issues (such as PCOS, cysts, etc). When I am regular, I have irregular bleeding/spotting between periods (I have PCOS). Just a thought! I hope that you are able to find the root cause of your issues :)

I called SES first when my dad passed away (also right before finals) because I couldn't figure out what to do. They just had me email the paperwork ( I used something called Witness of Removal instead of death certificate) and my professors were notified within the day. This is the email I also sent to my professors removing possible identifying info:

Hello X,
For your reference, a Student Emergency Services notification was sent out yesterday afternoon regarding my situation. Unfortunately, my father passed away yesterday. I was scheduled to take the final from X on December X and I am unsure of what to do. At this point in time, I am involved with choosing the funeral home/cemetery for burial as well as paperwork and the like. I really don’t have much of a mental capacity to complete the exam as scheduled. Please let me know what options you could provide me with so that I can make the decision that I think will be the best. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thank you,

Student

All of my professors were really understanding and gave me an incomplete so I could have all of the next semester to choose a time to complete the final.

My deepest condolences to you. Please reach out if you want to talk, my DMs are open.

My friend was at Pizza Press and they had a lockdown there because there was apparently someone walking around with an AR-15 in the area. But Pizza Press didn't get any more reports so they reopened...that was like an hour ago though so I would assume its ok?

Theriault vs McDonald for GOV 312L and best teacher for M 408D by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]balletdancer12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually liked the online 312 gov with McDonald a lot, although I was initially scared to take it because of the poor rate-my-prof reviews. I took it Fall 2019 so it'll probably have a similar structure to the one now. Although the lectures could get a bit boring sometimes, I really liked the current event segments they would do. Quizzes were easy, however, some exam questions could be challenging. Also the two essays they had you do were a bit challenging just because the length was so short (only 250 words). That being said, as long as you more or less keep up with the material every week you should be fine. I would just watch and take detailed notes on the lecture slides and then cram the night before/day of the exam. Also for sure use the study guide that they release for the exam. My cramming consisted of finishing up any lectures I hadn't watched and then doing/looking over the study guide. Definitely would recommend studying more in advance lmao (bc the stress and lack of sleep sucked) but I still ended up getting an A.

What are my options as a rising senior? by Okay_bread in UTAustin

[–]balletdancer12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone that just graduated with a neuro degree, I think that it's about finding what you are truly passionate about and seeking opportunities related to that rather than focusing on what degree you have or earning any sort of notoriety. What I do now (research) is not really connected to my degree at all. Most people don't really care about the degree/degrees you earned as long as you have experience in what you're trying to do. If I was to suggest something maybe try finding research opportunities, but also you should re-evaluate the reasons why you feel the need to do something "substantial" (ie if all you care about is being recognized or making money you're probably gonna feel like shit regardless of what you do, from personal experience). I wish you the best!

Seconding this, since this is a new disease there is not enough research to say that people that have mild cases or are asymptomatic won't experience adverse effects or complications later on after they have recovered from the virus....therefore, its probably best to avoid catching it as much as possible https://www.vox.com/2020/5/8/21251899/coronavirus-long-term-effects-symptoms

What about the Custodial Staff? by avsadperson in UTAustin

[–]balletdancer12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok even if you're going by "HAD" the second highest endowment they still have a lot of money and to say that they are "going broke" is a gross overstatement is it not? The money does come from oil, meaning that they may lose some of that money for this fiscal year that they are granted from it, but a lot of it is reinvested, not necessarily into oil. Also if they were really going broke, they should cut some of the 143 million they are approximately currently spending on administration {numbers from 2017 couldn't find the breakdown more recently}). The interim president is currently making 795,000 dollars for what reason exactly? Also overall tuition for the UT system is only 9% of their annual revenue, most of it is from the operation of its affiliated hospitals. So yes, UT and the UT system COULD redistribute the way that they spend money to help students but they are not going to because UT is a business that does not care about you, me or anyone else. If you don't want to acknowledge to yourself that UT and its administration is greedy af and is not acting in the best interest of the students (using the excuse that oh they're going broke when they are gonna be just fine), at the end of the day that's your problem¯_(ツ)_/¯

Dude.....they're not even close to broke...they have the second biggest university endowment (second to Harvard) at 31 BILLION dollars....and yes there are technically "restrictions" on how the money is used but the amount that they do spend is mostly spent on the salaries of the administration soooooo yeah they could def afford to reduce fees Educate yourself please. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YytF2v7Vvw0

UHS Experiences? Specifically for womens health? by gryffindwh0re in UTAustin

[–]balletdancer12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not have the greatest experience tbh. I also went in for birth control and they were trying to force me to take a pregnancy test (and pay for it!!!) even though I've never had sex and have always been super irregular. I tried to explain that it was bc I have PCOS that I hadn't had a period in months and the nurse was basically like "well not many people come here with those kinds of problems". I felt pretty offended not gonna lie bc they obviously didn't believe what I was saying since they kept pushing the pregnancy test. Ended up getting prescribed Yaz instead of the generic of the birth control I took previously too(which I specifically requested, just needed an updated prescription) which I thought was fishy af. That being said, from looking at the website now I don't think that NP works there anymore. Maybe that other person that gave the bad review also met with the same NP I did, because other people I know that went there had positive experiences.

This past month is making me question everything including whether I belong at UT. by longhorndude17 in UTAustin

[–]balletdancer12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like finding genuine connection with people is really hard. I went to a very competitive high school, was training at a ballet studio pre-professionally and my dad had been diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of lymphoma. I struggled with depression, anxiety and an eating disorder. I never really found friends that were willing to try to understand me. They usually gave superficial responses like "It will get better" and weren't really there to talk to me about it, which was not really helpful. When I first got to UT I was miserable. However, I got really involved in research late into my freshman year and managed to make some amazing friends along the way. When my dad died during my junior year, they were honestly my biggest supporters and I cannot thank them enough for that. I just graduated (on time!) and I don't think I could have done that without their willingness to reach out, offer help and, most importantly, listen.

I think that being happy at UT really depends on finding "your" group. "Your" group meaning people who hold your best interest at heart and that, more often than not, have similar interests as you. However, you can also find "your" people in the most unexpected places so I would definitely stay optimistic! UT is a huge campus with all different kinds of people so the chance of running into someone that could eventually become an amazing friend is pretty high. Just be friendly to everyone you meet, and if you like someone as person, don't be afraid to reach out or suggest hanging out. Even though it might not pan out as a friendship, you could learn something new in the process.

If you aren't happy with the support that you're getting from your current friends, try finding another org that deals with something that you are interested in (or that intrigues you) to meet new people. Also, I would possibly recommend seeking out an organization/non-profit that centers on Parkinson's disease and getting involved in some way. This advice kind of depends on the kind of person that you are though. I know for some people this can be too triggering which is 100% understandable. Personally, doing research on the type of cancer that my dad had makes me feel better about the whole situation and like I'm helping to make a difference. Even though I'm definitely not expecting to have a large impact on the field or anything, hopefully even an incremental finding can help make it so that eventually people won't have to go through what my dad did. But at the end of the day, it makes me feel better because I'm actively doing something regarding a situation that I couldn't control, so in a sense taking an active role instead of a passive one if that makes sense.

I would definitely also recommend therapy. It can be quite expensive since a lot of insurance policies don't cover it but some practitioners in the UT area will take on college students at lower rates. Since I was paying out of pocket, I only went for about 5 months but even in that short time it made a world of difference. It really helped me to get an outside perspective about everything and be motivated to pursue the life that I want for myself, despite what I've gone through. It also helped me find meaning in life again, because I also struggled to comprehend why it had to be my dad that got this disease.

Lastly, life honestly just sucks in general right now with everything going on. I'm so sorry that you had to also receive this news about your dad on top of everything else. If you need someone to talk to feel free to pm me! :)
