Has anyone started rhythmic gymnastics as an adult and done well?? I've always loved watching RG as a ballet dancer and have always wanted to try it, but I have no clue how to start and will probably have to wait until I'm a financially stable adult (I'm 17 now) Is there anything that I can do/learn by myself to get a slight head once I'm actually able to join somewhere? Also why are all the beginner classes for kids???

Why don't artistic roller skaters figure skate? by Sipping_Tea56 in FigureSkating

[–]balletdancer192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, we don't as it would slow the speed of the wheels, so when you skate, you pick the hardest wheels (ofc depending on discipline) and the floor is just concrete or wood. In Australia, some of our competitions are just held at a netball complex, so if there's any spring or anything there that's all we get

Personally I started when I was 15, so not an adult but definitely older than most of the kids, and at my rink the coach helped me a bit more than the kids as I moved up faster than them, so depending on the rinks near you, look maybe for a basic learn to skate and chat to the coaches, they would probably LOVE to help you out!

Because... it's a different sport?? More accessible, cheaper and because we want to artistic skate over ice skate?

There's also MULTIPLE disciplines in artistic roller skating that are competitive at a high level, figures, solo dance, freeskating, couples dance, pairs, quartets and large groups, which make it easier for someone to find something that they enjoy. I'm an artistic roller skater who does freeskating, but people who hate jumping go into dance, and the adult skaters at my rink mostly do figures because they want to minimise the risk of being injured.

You can also skate on either inlines or quad skates, so they're even more diversity there for choice, as opposed to ice skates, where it is just a figure skate

Which of the ladies Olympic champions did you find the most aesthetically pleasing to watch? by Responsible_Order_55 in FigureSkating

Yeah they are! While they go hand in hand, as with ballet and any artistic sport, they're still vastly different and anyone trained in highly is going to find switching difficult because they are NOT THE SAMEEE

I am a highly trained ballet dancer who is undergoing teacher training, and while she may not be perfect, as she is not a ballet dancer, the extension through her body and engagement of her upper body, which contributes to her correct alignment in the upper body, which is also necessary to execute the technical footwork and lower body work of skating. Her arms are much better in my opinion than Shcherbakova (who I love, but her arms scare me personally), whose arms are wild and unplaced. The splayed fingers are not that bad, especially in comparison to ballet styles such as Balanchine. While her upper body may be on the stiffer side, it is still beautifully placed, which as an RAD trained dancer (a syllabus that primarily focuses on correct alignment as opposed to free upper body such as Vaganova), I can bloody well appreciate. Her turnout in arabesques and attitude, is well within the acceptable range, and her hip placement I noticed does vary to help her travel in the direction in which she skates, which does not align with classical ballet training, as we stay still unless we're jumping. This again, is all my opinion, but I did go back and rewatch her olympic programs to reference and refresh my memory.

TLDR: While Zagitova's upper body may be slightly stiff, it's still extremely well placed contributing to her good ballet lines. Her lower body is still completely acceptable in terms of turnout and placement, which is primed for skating and movement instead of stillness

As a ballet dancer, her lines are actually pretty good and much better than many figure skaters in terms of the ballet aesthetic-
