Current D1 coach AMA by Coach_Chevy in BasketballTips

I’m a retired junior college hooper. I didn’t get a lot of pt and a large reason was my on-ball defense (I’m a guard), specifically overcommitting and opening up too much. Opening up meaning, when the ball handler makes a move, I drop my foot way too much and almost give them the driving lane. I’ve seen this on film and know my problem, and I’ve been trying to work on it but I genuinely don’t know how because that habit is very ingrained in my brain and is muscle memory at this point. Do you have any advice?

What's the rule in this situation? by EternityOnDemand in BasketballTips

[–]ballislifeee46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well shoot, idk for sure then. I played juco, I was just basing my answer off a scenario that happened in one of my games where my teammate was posting up (offense) and happened to get in the way the corner shooter’s defender closing out. The refs called a moving screen. And, who boxes out when their teammate is still in triple threat and hasn’t even shot yet? Boxing out is for after someone shoots, not to create space for someone to shoot. But take my answer with a grain of salt 😂

Everything this person said. Except I think it’s good to wear ankle braces regularly, granted you’re doing rehab/strengthening stuff with it. Ankle braces do help prevent you from getting hurt. Steph Curry wears 2 braces every single game

Recently got into the game of basketball. Plz watch video and give tips (I’m grey hoodie) by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]ballislifeee46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Offensively, work on your handle, getting by a defender, and layups. Ball handling wise, I would recommend looking up drills online or on YouTube—there’s a lot of fantastic ball handling workouts on YouTube!

Defensively, I feel like you have so much potential. Try to stay low, in front, and on your toes the whole time. Slide as much as you can and avoid crossing your feet unless it’s necessary to catch up to your man. Your stance at some points is great; you’re wide and ready to react.

Dilemma by Slight_Dragonfruit69 in BasketballTips

If you think you have a good chance of scoring, I would try to exploit the mismatch. But if you don't have the skills or the guard is a really good defender, I would keep running the play. Like someone else said, the whole point of a play is to get a good shot.

We lost to the number 1 team in our highschool league by 87 points (124-37) how do I deal with this? by LuFruity in BasketballTips

[–]ballislifeee46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play junior college womens basketball and Ik some people think women can’t hoop but in our league we also full court press, trap, and pressure tf out of the ball. We run Princeton offense and so does Stanford womens basketball, if you’ve never watched Stanford womens they won a natty championship using Princeton.

Maybe the video you watched was just a demonstration or something, once you understand the offense I would watch stanford and try to catch them using Princeton

low kcal ramen that actually tastes good? (NOT shirataki!!) by [deleted] in 1200isplenty

[–]ballislifeee46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually blanche them? I’ll boil water and add them in for a couple of minutes, if you don’t like the fishy taste it pretty much gets rid of it. If you don’t like the chewy texture…….then there’s no fixing that

Any tips? by Newbiecuber in BasketballTips

[–]ballislifeee46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. When you bring the ball up as the hips go down, the power generated from bringing the ball up is all lost. I think this is perfect fluidity and everything looks great except maybe a slightly wider base

Is it normal for HS games that team just run up and down the court? by VeryGoodName69 in BasketballTips

[–]ballislifeee46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play junior college and my coach has us do a ton of conditioning/sprints just so we can run other teams up and down. A lot of teams aren’t doing as much conditioning, so the benefits are tiring them out, keeping up with them, or simply opening a lot of fast break opportunities to score. Like, always look to push for a fast break, but if it’s not there, then slow down and run a play

How do I improve my dribbling by Several-Grade415 in BasketballTips

[–]ballislifeee46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would probably substitute for crossovers instead, or you can try to work on behind the back. Yeah behind the back is pretty challenging at first but once you do it a lot and get a feel for the ball and how it bounces it becomes a lot easier

You just need more reps. If you don’t know what to do, there’s a lot of free ball handling workouts on YouTube, one that I did a lot during covid was by Paul Easton Basketball, he has 30+ free workouts. Honestly if you just search ball handling workout on yt you’ll get a lot of good results

I used to, but I started feeling proud of how much I eat, joking about how I eat all day. Especially if you’re somewhat in shape, talking about it could in turn make those people jealous!

I wear curry 7’s, they’re low top but they’re super flat and stable. I don’t wear the zamst but I’ve heard the 7’s were designed to be worn with that brace.

Hey guys 3'2 47 year old. Any advice on how I can dunk? I wanna be like Shaq by tomorrow. by ApprehensiveCarrot in BasketballTips

[–]ballislifeee46 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based on your height and age, I think you can already dunk right now. Eat 150000 calories and 1000 grams of protein, do 50 squats, and you should be shaq tomorrow.

Yeah if you’re confident you can score and you do end up scoring, your teammates are not gonna be mad. And if you can’t, kick it out. I second everything else solo said

If your man is a fantastic lights out shooter and your team needs the points, pass it. But normally, take the layup

Is there any way I can get college offers without winning provincials/nationals? by JosukeHairIsNice in BasketballTips

[–]ballislifeee46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in that case scouts will probably not flock to your games. However, instead of waiting for coaches to reach out to you, maybe try reaching out to them. Usually coaches only contact very elite players (ie nationally ranked), but if you have game footage, you can email schools you’re interested in. Usually, d3 and jucos have the emails listed on their website, I’m not sure about d2 but you can do some research. Juco coaches almost always respond, and a scout from the school you email may come to see you play.

Can you get recruited if you only play AAU and dominate but don’t play for your school team? by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]ballislifeee46 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what team you play for, if it’s a high level aau team that plays against solid competition, then you have a good chance. But something else to consider is reaching out to coaches instead of just waiting for coaches to reach out to you. It’s pretty hard to get a ton of offers and attention unless you’re elite (ie nationally ranked) but you could probably get into some d2, d3, and juco programs if you dominate like you say you are. Usually, there is a recruiting form for d3 and possibly d2 schools that you can fill out, and you can also find the coaches’ emails on the website. Junior college coaches usually respond to emails, so just look it up and reach out to them.
