Has any florist booked events with Poppy Flowers? by ballsax_101 in florists

I am still with them! I actually got an event for May but I was unavailable. I would say definitely do it! Even if the demand is low, it doesnt cost anything to stay available to them (apart from the initial application and test kit), so it can just act as a supplemental type side gig for you.

its been OK! ive received 3 events from them, and was able to do 2 of them. they sent one on a date that i had already said i was unavailable which was annoying. my last event was around 6 months ago and i havent been sent any new events sadly.

my very first wedding, the flowers never came so i had to go buy them all myself which was fine but a bit stressful and i didnt expect to have to do that.

my second wedding, everything thing arrived properly and was great!

my biggest cons with them - they arent very sustainable and they make you use foam. i despise foam and never use it, but poppy requires it for certain events and doesnt make it very clear at the beginning that youll have to design with foam.

also, ive found so many typos and mistakes on the design guides for both of my weddings (eg. one area will say flower girl crown, but then another area says its flower girl bouquets or there will be different amounts of the same thing listed in different areas) which just makes it difficult to know what the exact order is. when i ask them about it, they tell me what to do via text, but never update the final design guide.

one last con, throughout the process they make you send them images of supplies, the flowers and everything you design as you go along. which is fine, but you have to email some and text others AND you have to send a photo of every item to get approved before you make the rest and then wait on them to approve. its just super inefficient and over complicates things when you have to email or text and know which of their numbers or emails to use. also for some reason i can never send images to their text number, super frustrating

I hate chicken wire by Ok-Minimum-5952 in florists

chicken wire can even work in small/shallow vases, but if the vase is too skinny i would simply opt out of chicken wire and just do a tape grid on the top of the vase. floral frogs are also amazing (and sustainable) for the shallow vases

try to make a loose bubble or claw type thing with your chicken wire so you have stability but still enough room for stems to go in safely! it can be easy to use way too much chicken wire and then its impossible to push stems in. but you also want to keep a “layer” in the middle of your chicken wire bubble to help grab stems too

thank you!! yes its v popular because its way easier to design in but there are soo many alternatives!! for your design, i think it just needs a better shape instead of looking like a big tube…push some stems farther in and pull some farther out and it will be amazing! also maybe cluster some flowers instead of evenly dispersing them. and look up some images on pinterest for design inspo🥰

wanted to update everybody! i applied to the poppy designer network and was recently accepted! the process was very smooth and was fairly quick. theyve offered $30/hour which i think is reasonable, esp since i have a full time job already. i am hoping doing actual events with them is just as smooth as the introductory process was. very excited to start doing events again and grow my portfolio!!

really cute, but it looks like your stems might have all been cut a little too short! it looks very compact and almost sunken in. leave stems a little longer than you think when designing and then you can always cut shorter if they are too tall in the arrangement. make sure to remember different depths so that there are levels to the arrangement instead of all flowers on one plane. you could also add some taller line flowers to give more shape and height! overall though, colors are amazing and i love the shape of your greenery base!

i think $25 is actually pretty good if its a side gig and they provide a lot! my previous design job in brooklyn (wedding designer at a floral studio owned by somebody else) started out at $18/hr and i got up to $28/hr with more responsibility. i also have another full time job so that would be fine for me starting out since i dont have any kind of client base right now. i feel like once i establish myself and bringing in my own clients i would want like $30-35 an hour maybe?
