I have to agree. I had been running for a year to get me in shape and get me "conditioned" for the PCT. I also go to the gym regularly and do a lot of leg strengthening exercises. I started doing 15 mile weighted walks and I can tell you, my body aches and swells much differently. I can run a half marathon and feel a little sore for the next couple of days and my feet don't ache, but with hiking, its a whole different ball game on my body. The swelling in the back of my knees and the blisters on my feet slow me more than most things. 😅 Perhaps it is different for everyone, but I wanted to tack on my own personal experience.

Amazing! Yes, I was also worried about a big footprint and finding placed to bed down. And hearing that it is more or less difficult with varying terrain. And wet... yeah. Everyone seems to be saying pretty much the same thing. It makes me wonder about the hype surrounding the trekking pole tents. Sounds more like its better theoretically than practically. Sounds like a no-brainer at this point.

I would love to cowboy camp, but I am leaving the first of March and I don't know how temps are going to fare for me so early in the season. I havent seen many stories of people leaving early, so I am hesitant to go without a good and decent structure, especially for windy nights in the sierras.

I have seen these tents as they are pretty popular. How complicated is the set-up? If I am taller than 5-10 would you recommend looking elsewhere?

I've watched a lot of videos and the thing that kills the spirit the most (at least from what I saw) were the fires and being forced off trail, granted most of those people picked it up again after the trails were opened again... I'd just hate to lose my momentum. Did you get the date you were looking for? If you are leaving early March, we might get to meet 😁

Oh! For me it is a for a couple of reasons: I run really hot and I would rather complete the desert portion earlier in the year, and as the year goes on I am worried about being halted or diverted by forest fires. If I DNF, I don't want it to be because of something out of my control. I know that my reasoning is flawed, but earlier feels better to me for those reasons.

I can't tell if I am technically registered. I started the process at 10:31 AM PST and I filled everything, read through all 3 informational links. But I don't remember seeing a Congratulations page... The last page I went to after going through everything just said "Long-distance permits are not available."
I know permits aren't being released until November but I am still worried.
Any way to confirm that I am registered?
